It had been borne by four sons of James II., when Duke of York; but the first of these sons was only Duke of Cambridge designate, and died in his cradle before the patent could be passed. Two of his brothers bore it for three and four. years, respectively; and Charles Stuart, his half-brother, Mary of Modena's son, had been Duke of Cambridge for a dozen weeks when he followed the others in 1677. Not quite thirty years later, there was creat- od 'n Duke and Marquis of Cambridge, who, by and by, became George II. London:
THE HOUSE OF Sts. By Marcelle Tinayre,
Translated by A Symth. Maclaren and Company.
The translation of this book from the French adds a very powerfully written novel to the year's books, and one that. will be near the top of the list at the end of 1904. The story is a remarkable one; the characters are also remarkable and dis- tinctive; and the book teems with tine descriptive passages. It is realistic-per- hape too much so for the British reader-

tion naturally arises, how is it that a flag Bown all over the British dominions by the Guild, cannot be flown in the Straits! The Guild has over ten thousand members, and we believe a good many of the skippers belonging to it take a prille in showing that they are members of a society that does a good deal for them. If they do this in other parts of the world, why not in this? The argument is supposed to be that the flag might be mistaken for the Union Jack. Well, so might the Gien tag. And anyway it does not seem a great offence for a British Master on a British ship in a British Port to fly an adaptation of his country's flag, when that happens to epresent à British society known all over

This discipline of self-restraint can be traced in the speech as well as in the man. Only & pomegranate is he, who, when he gapes his mouth, displays the con tents of his heart,' is a popular saying in Japan, and one which these people believe in sincerely. To their minds, speech is given more to conceal thoughts than to re- veal them, and sinco that is the case readers who are perplexed at the inability of the superior white man to get information of matters pertaining to the present war will perhaps now comprehend the difficulties which present themselves to us correspon- dents, who receive courteous rebuffs when- over we attempt to extract information from the officials at the War Office.
