NEWS FROM PORT ARTHUR.
The 'Novi Krai' Still Publishing. The following translation from the Novi Kvai of the 30th March is taken from the Shanghai Mercury :
-
After the usual church service, a parade consisting of parts of several regiments was held on the grounds adjoining the church in commemoration of the sixth year of the occupation of Port Arthur. Colonel Gandarin commanded the parade, whilst the band of the 18th East Siberian Sharpshooters' Regiment contributed the music.
A.aongat those present were the chief of the P. A. Kinchow Army Division, as alsg was Lieut.-General Stessel.
Aftor receiving the report from the par- ade commander, and the parade present were put through a few movements, Lieut. General Stessel approached the forces and Faid :-
To-day exactly six years ago, the Russian flag was hoisted by Prince Vladimirovich on the Golden Hill, who at the present moment is again amongst us serving on the fleet of the Pacific Ocean. Port Arthur was occupied by the 9th East Siberian Sharp- shooters regiment without a single shot and now after six years of hardship in construct- ing the forts, town, etc, we find ourselves obliged to defend the place against a neigh- bouring country who wities to take it out of our hands. Not imagining for a single moment that they will ever accomplish this, I am convinced that the flag is there to stay even in the event of another war.
We now congratulate our Emperor (this was im- mediately followed by 'hurrahs' which prolonged till the crder was given to stop) *Men, I have already asid that the flag was hoisted by Prince Vladimirovich who is at

After this Lieut-General Stessel read to the parade a telegram received from His Highness Viceroy Alexeief in which the Viceroy congratulated Lieut-General Stee sel and his forces for the sixth year of oc- cupation of Port Arthur (cries of hurrah '). After this, Lieut-General Stessel said, On the theatre of War has arrived the commander of the Manchurian forces, General Adjutant Kuropatkin, under whom, I don't imagine for a single moment, we will not be able to stand against our foe should they ever come to us. For congratulating General Adjutant Kuropatkin (cries of * hurrah '),

SUICIDE AT SHANGHAI.
Sad Death of Mr M.ĮSachs, Shanghai was shocked Ton Saturday morning (says the N.-C. Daily News of the 18th inst.) by the report of the death of Mr M. Sacha under the circumstancea mentioned hereunder. Mr Sachs, who was
very well-educated and well-read inan, a great lover of music, and a welcome lecturer at the Union Church Hall, came hore from Yokohama nearly three years ago and joined the firm of F. Bavier and Com- pany, of which he ceased to be a meniber some four nonths ago. His wife died here some two years ago, and he has left three small children, two boys and a girl, who are at Copenhagen, It may be mentioned that on Mr do Bavier's strong recommendation, he obtained the post of Secretary of the Tientsin Club which he was about to take up, and that on his representing to Mr de Bavier, to whom he was already indebted in a consideratge sum, that he was in want of a few hundred dollars to regulate his accounts before leav. ing Shanghai, Mr de Bavier had kindly promised to advance him the amount he required. Mr Sachs made many friends during his residence here, as was shown by the attendance at his funeral yesterday afternoon, and the numerous and hand- some wreaths that were sent or taken to
his grave by his Panish fellow-countrymen and others.
The following minutes of the inquiry touching the th of Martin P. Sachs were kindly furnished by Mr J. Ranschon, the Danish Consul.
The inquiry was held at the Consulate on Saturday According to the evidence of
the Police, the body of Martin P. Sachs,
Danish subject, was found at 8,20 an, that
