JOHN MAXWELL'S MARRIAGE By Step hen Gwynne Macmillan's Colonial Library (Forwarded by Mesars Kelly and Kalah.)
This is a most improbable story, even
for Ireland, and we would-
believe, as we have seen it
is probably

́of the Ireland of the period in which the story is set. Nevertheless, the firm of the story, with all itsimprobabilities contains some fine charao- ter drawing, and the whole of the writing is worthy of the olaver author of The Old Knowledge.'. The despotic James Nesbit,
an Anglo-Irish squire of inflexible will and pride, is the best drawn, but it is im possible to like him. Two especially dramatic bits of writing are the marriage ecene and Maxwell's escape in the second phase of the story. It reads easily, which is another point in its favour.
THE LONG NIGHг. By Stanley Weymad. Longmans Colonial Library. (For- warded by Messra Kelly and Walsh.) Stanley Weyman is always entertaining. In The Long Night,' however, he is not at his best. There is plenty of incident and very little plot, but even the incident is reminiscent of older writers and does not come with that freshness we expect in our novel reading nowadays. Laid in the early part of the Seventeenth Century, the story centres round the attempt of the Duke of Savoy, as the representative of the Catholic powers, to get the free city of Geneva' into his hands. Geneva must-have been a more exciting place to live in in those days than it is now, Mr Weyman manages to sustain the interest in the main plot, while be weaves in a somewhat gloomy incident of On the whole, the, novel does not love, appeal to us, but it is not improbable that it be widely read.
STELLA FREDELIUS. A tale of three des- tinies. By Rider Haggard. Longman's Colonial Library. (Forwarded by Messrs Kelly and Walsh).
This latest book by Rider Haggard is distinctly a new departure for the writer. The all-absorbing passion of love, earthly and spiritual, is the centre around which the interest of the book wiroles. Morris Monk, an inventor, whose delvings into the unknown lead him to utterly dis- regard all mundane affairs, is depicted as trying to perfect an instrument to enable persons to converse with each other at any distance. He has been brought up in the company of his cousin Mary, whose soft nature cannot understand the passion with which Morris regards his invention. her side ripens into Sympathy on love, while Morris, unheedful of (the", true condition, goes indifferently on. The close sympathy that oxists between them becomes broken, until Morris father points out to him the necessity A rich marriage to bolster up the shattered fortunes of the family and to keep the name of Monk in existence. Morris' nature revolts at the suggestion, but finding that Mary regards him favour- ably, he-presses his suit and is accepted. His interest in ethereal objects is slackened until the dramatic arrival of Stella Frege lius. She is a strange mixture of fatalism and faith, bolding the next world to be the true life. Descended from the hardy Nor sewomen, Stella retains many of their traits and Characteristics. Morris finds her alone on a wrecked ship, whither he went in search of her, singing the death song of her ancestors. He succeeds in rescuing her,

A SINGULAR STORY.
A Parson and His Wives,
In the Divorce and Probate Division London on the 8th. ult, before Mr Justice Barnes, the Itev. Isane Bornard Pegg, at Baptist church at one time pastor of Fressing field, Suffolk, petitioned for the dissolution of his marriage on the ground of the misconduct of his wife, Rachael, with
the Co-respondent, Samuel Gowing.
In opening the case for the Petitioner Mr. Prichard said it was of a somewhat unusual character, because the Petitioner in 1875, believing his wife was dead, wont through the ceremony of marriago with a Miss Emily Griffiths, at Huddersfield Parish Church. He subsequently became aware that his first wife was not dead, but not withstanding this he continued to live with was advised that it

Counsel contended
which the Court was
entitled to exercise discretion, and grant a divorce from the first wife, even though Petitioner had continued to live with the second,
Mr Justice Barnes said he did not think there was any precedent for such a course, but he would hear the evidence.
Petitioner was called and stated that he married his first wife in March, 1885. Ho was then pastor of a local Baptist Church, but in 1869 he went out to San Domingo to take charge of the mission there. Further evidenco was given to show that the Respondent was still alive, and living at Hitcham, Suffolk, as Mrs Samuel Gow- ing.
After hearing Mr Pritchard on behalf of the Petitioner, Mr Justico Barnes said he would give judgment on the following day. On the 9th ult., MrJustice Barnes and the result of his consideration of the case Was that he really could not act on the evidence given, or come to the conclusion that the Petitioner had reasonable grounds In for helieving his first wife was read.

Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanao Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tido-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charta which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inchos below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 8 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the hoight given in the table.
