the drug-habit is not nearly so widespread,
either in this country or in Great Britain, as in certain parts of the European con- tinent. Of all the beverages with which
the inhabitants of the United States and of Great Britain stupefy their brains and doll their intellects, whisky appears to be the one most in favour. Its consumption, especially in England and Scotland, has increased enormously within recent years. In fact, Bo disastrous have been the results of the whisky-habit on the other side, that special inquiries have been instituted to investigate the matter exhaustively. The British Medical Journal (December 26) has a special article which gives the outcome of investigations into the modes of manu- facturing whisky in England and Scotland. Those were the conclusions come to: It appears, first, when whisky began to come into extensive use it was made from malted barley, and that such reputation as it for relative wholsomeness- possesses was founded on the malt whisky; second, we now learn that this type hae been
two-thirds replaced by of the total consumption by a spirit made from different materiale by a different process, and that the by products it contains are, as might have been anticipat- ed, different; third, it appears that know- ledge of the chemical nature of these by products, though it has increased in recent years, is still very imperfect, and that prac NOTE -On and after the lat of May the tically nothing, is known as to their and lastly, that Fees for Shorthand will be considerably physiological action

if 4 person drinks spirits, he should at any rate be able to obtain the kind of spirits he desires. When he asks that ho for old whisky, it is not should be given a product mysteriously prepared and chemically matured? This is an age of sham and delusion, so far as many foods and most spirituous beverages are concerned. There is needed a Dickens or a Reade to expose the methods in vogue among manufacturers of preserved foods and of alcoholic beverages. Probably, if the subject were thoroughly probed, it would be found that American makers of whisky are as conscienceless as are their a British brothers, and care little for the public health so long as they can fill their own pockets.
