THE CHRONIC BACHELOR in the N.-C. Daily News.
LADIES AT HOOKEY.
| Field of Two and Twenty Sweet
and Twenties.
[BY A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT,] England and Wales were not the only two countries that contended in sport yes- terday. For England and Scotland sent their hardiest growths of girlhood to match themselves at hockey in the Old Deer Park at Richmond.
Twenty years ago young women were al- ready playing hockey, and the girls, of Somerville Hall were among the pioneers. But they played it in Oriental seclusion, behind jealous walls, and cynical under- graduates could only surmise-unjustly.- that they used a worsted ball.
Ladies' hockey has developed since then. There are now regular international mat- ches. Nor am I any longer thrown back on unjust surmises. I pay my shilling, and marsh in with a crowd, and there are the two and twenty girls for my admiration, with one umpire—a man-to look after them.
England' wore red skirts, with white blouses, while Scotland' distinguished it- self by dark purple skirts and-if I may hazard it-heliotrope blouses. There is a rule of the All-England Women's Hookey Association about skirts. Six inches from the ground-more if preferred. Shin. guards are allowed. Few players wore them. They are not consistent with short skirt.
But my admiration was mainly spent on the intense seriousness of the game. There was a sprinkling of snow, a dense fog at the start, and a mild snowstorm before ⚫ half-time' was whistled. No one dream- ed of shelter or shirking before the hour. and ten minutes was passed. It was real hockey, scientific, bold, fearless ; when a collision brought a tumble; the tumbler took the accident like a lady; and when the masculine umpire blew his whistle two and twenty sweet and twenties came to heel without a murmur. One really ought. BUSINESS TRAINING COLLEGA.to practise whistling in the last ditch
against feminine advance.

of the cabinan. The crowd was serious, critical, and often vociferous, especially when, again and again, England' invaded Scotland' with success. There were obvious high-school girls—in pigtails-about the ropes; there were stalwart young women in overconts daintier dresser in furs and a hat that could (if that is the word); and now and again a

Somehow the applause was different from that which usually comes from the ropes, It was neither baritone nor car-splitting,
but treble. And the intenseness of interest: was alowed by the advice that came from the soul of the ring.

IMMIGRANTS AND DISEASE.
A Woman Punished.
On March 5 the Chinese junk Hin Sheng Lec arrived at Singapore with im- migrants who were allowed to land before intimation was given to the Chinese Protectorate For this the Tuikony (Captain) was prosecuted and tined $125 Enquiries were then made for the passongers, as it became known that a girl had died on the voyage, and Chief Sanitary Inspector Mayhew at length found a Chinese girl about 12 years of age suffering with small- pox at No 405 Serangoon Road. A Chin. ese woman named Moh Ab See was with her. The girl was removed to the quaran- ; tine camp, and action was taken against the woman. On March 27 she was arraign- ed before Mr Pensock on the charge of removing a person suffering from small-pox, thus incurring the risk of spreading. infection. The woman brought two girls with her. She has been a resident here for ten years, and was once before charged | for not reporting a case of small-por. The ' defendant pleaded ignorance of the girl's illness. Dr Glennio said the girl wan! suffering from small-pox. He had board that she had arrived from China on the 5th or 6th March. All the passengers that eame ashore then had been accounted for except six. The defendant was brought to him on the 18th March, and with some difficulty she was induced to indicate the A Chinant house where the chill was. proval that the girl had been brought to No 405 Serangoon Road in a
