WHEN HELEN SHOWS HER
TEETH.
When Helen smiled and showed her teeth
Like gleaming rows of pearls Between her coral lips. I swore
I prized that radiant smile far more Than all the riches set in store
For foreign dukes aud, earls. But now when Helon shows her teath The time has come I know--: From long experience at that-
To merely take my coat and hat, Evacuate our cozy flat,
And clubward promptly go.

MIXED METAPHORS.
A writer in 'T. P.'s Weekly' says:-'I ouce heard an 'address' on 'Ought Mon to Marry?' in which the counsel for the prosecution, the leader of the opposition to matrimony, warned his fellow youths from the height of his experience, 'to guard themselves, like Ulysses, against the seduc- tive blandishments of the Lorelei, who would, with their fascinating waists and ankles, lure our sex into the surging depths of the maelstrom of matrimony." He asked them in conclusion to nail their ears to the mast, so that they might not see the Circes who would woo them from their caves of celibacy. The speech was loudly applauded, and the speaker was complimented upon his eloquence. Even that abode of perfection in retirement, the House of Lords, is not exempt from criticism. The late Lord 664 Kenyon, speaking, no doubt, against some proposed legal innovation, warned his audience that 'if an individual can break down any of those safe-guards which the Constitution has so wisely and so cautiously erected, by poisoning the minds of the jury at a time when they are called upon to decide, he will stab the administration of justice in its most vital part." It was an eloquent American politician who said:-The muddy slough of politics is the rock upon which our party has split in twain, and fallen to pieces from the pinnacle of imperishable farme. Let us then gird up our loins, so that we may go forth with a clear head.'

THE FOURTH TEST MATCH.
Humours of the Crowd.
The following is taken from the Sydney Morning Herald of the 27th ult, :—
The candid outspoken critics of tho shilling resorve yesterday were not so painfully in evidence as on the occasion of the last test match. It was feared by many thal Mr. Crockett, the umpire, would meet with a hostile reception, but contrary to anticipation, when he and the other arbiter of cricket fate walked on to the ground, they were cordially welcomed and applauded. Later on, when Braund seemed disinclined to obey the umpire, ho was liberally advised to get off the field.'
The know.alls of the hill showed an intimato acquaintance with the players by referring to them by their Christian names, or some fanciful sobriquet conferred upon them by the crowd. Warner's retirement was rapturously applauded. As Warner wont pavilionwards Noble went too, and they seemed to striko an individual with a booked nose as significant.
*Noble must have had a bet on that, und goin' in to collect," he said.
Cotton's advent in the text team was much
commented upon When the fast bowler was rattling in some rapid balls and making them bump, both Warner and Hayward Hay. were kept busy dodging them. ward, after ducking to avoid the flight of leather mummon hall, desired the sight-board shifted. Ons on the hill advised him to get it put up in the air.
Trumble's quiet delivery and evident work on the ball were much appreciated. After getting wicker the Molbournian was examining the geomus of the ball as he turned it round and in a contemplative fashion, when one is the crowd conveyed thee information to all and sundry that
tong bloke was whisperin' to it.'
