The editor of a London illustrated weekly had allowed him to escape in an unguarded moment, and he came to Taku bar on a British transport. He advanced to Tientsin with the Indian Field Post outfit, and the good natured. chaps of this servico forwarded him to Pekin, where he was turned loose to forage for himself,

Bilkington was an accident as war correspondent; as a campaigner he was positively a crime. He had never before been beyond the suburbs of London, he had never ridden & horse, and as for getting food otherwise than by ordering it in a respectable restaurant from a bill of fare, his experience was a blauk. Pelham Warner is, next to Captain Hon. F. Stanley Jackson, about the most self- possessed cricketer we have. Educated at Rugby and Oxford, this famous member. of the Uitlandor-Middlesex Champion County team is immediately to be recog- nised on the cricket fiold by his Oxford harlequin cap, straight bat, and habit, when about to get ready to face the bowler, of hitching up his breeks from behind. The hitch is world famous, hav- ing been seen on most of the cricket grounds of the West Indies, the States, South Africa, and the Transvaal, Portugal, New Zealand (hoth islands), Australia, and England, for. as Warner in his many speeches seldom fails to mention, he has travelled upwards of thirty thousand miles in search of cricket in many Can it be learned as well by post as at
