FOOTBALL-SHIELD TIE.

II.K.F.C. vernus B.M.8.' 'OCEAN.'

At the Happy Valley, on Saturday after. noon, the above teams met to play off their shield tie. When the result of the draw in this round became known, it was anticipat- ed that this match would be one of the best in the competition. Saturday's game was very keenly contested, and at times play

was quite exciting. The spectators num- bered quite two thousand.

The teams were as follows :---

H. K. F. C. : F. II. Kew, goal; Austen and Aucott, backs; Gray, Bonner, and C. T. Kew, halves; Williams, Cooper, Han. cock, Whitamore and Danby, forwards,

H. M. S. Ocean; McDiarmaid, goal; McIntyre and Hall, backs; Wright, Holt, and Schwann, halves; Spinner, Cornabe, Downie, Walmsley, and Vaughan, for- warda.

Referee, Mr Davies.

Having lost the spin of the coin, Downie for the Ocean kicked off facing the sun. The opening exchanges found the Club's forwards pressing, but their weak shooting spoiled their efforts so far. At the other ond, Auslin and Aucott had to work hard to keep the Ocean forwards from scoring. A little later, Bonnar kicked out to save an attack by Vaughan. The Ocean for wards, who were being splendidly served by their halves and backs, kept up the pressure, A combined attack by the Ocean forwards resulted in the first goal of the match being scored. Walmsley. by clover foot work, piloted the ball straight into Kew's hands. Kew Raved well, but the reforça decided that the ball had been over the line when Kow saved, and he awarded the Ocean their first goal. From the restart the naval boys once more attacked, until Whitamore relieved He with a dashing run up the wing. placed too far out, and from the throw- in. Cooper and Williams worked the all well up field, but Cooper's part- ing shot

was just a trifle wide and high. Hancock, a little later, when in a good position for shooting, found himself offside. The Ocean forwards broke away once more, and from a beautiful contra by Spinner, Cornabo headed the ball to Downie, who in turn headed passed Kew, thus registering the Ocean's second gaol. A good try by Vaughan a little later just missed by inches. Half-time found the Club attacking, and the score rending- Ocean, 2; Club, 0.

Hancock, for the Club, opened the second half, and a nice run down was turn- ed aside by MacIntyre A combined attack

looked dangerous. Breaking away at last, Whitsmore dashed down the field, but ho

Receiving a good pass from Hancock, Whitamore drove a straight ball into the net, giving McDiar maid no chance of saving. A little later Hail, the Ocean's loft back, retired for a short time, having received a nasty knuck on the knee, The Club's forwards were now playing with more vigour and dash, and the Ocean's defence was severely tested time after time, but MacIntyre and Hall were always ready for work. During aidfield exchanges Kew head- ed the ball in the direction of his own goal by mistake, and Spinner getting possession he dashed off with the hall at his foot. He passed in good time to Downie, who returned, and Spinner drove the leather passed Kow From the kick-off the Ocean's forwards returned to the attack, but Bonner, who, all through, had been playing a good game, kicked out to Hancock and savo a dangerous situation.

his forwards commenced an attack on the Ocean goal, with the result that Danby

scored the Club's second goal. This madle

JAPANESE RED CROSS SOCIETY.

'China Mail' Fund. As we stated in our issue of Monday last we have opened a Fund in aid of the Japanese Red Cross Society. It has been suggested that the sympathetic funds being collected by foreigners in Japan and the Treaty Ports of China should be devoted to the wives and families of Reservists and to the relief of Widows and Orphans of those who may lose their lives in the war with Russia. There is no reason why money collected in Hongkong should not be devoted to the some object, provided

is

A proper organisation there administer the Fund; but, in any case, however wealthy the Japanese Red Cross Society may be by repute, the present war is likely to strain its resources. The oause is a worthy one, and well deserves support.

FIRST DAY.-Tuesday, Februa y 23. The Jockey Club's Race Meeting was inaugurated to day in glorious weather. A gentle breeze tempered the sun's warm rays, and the day was as dolightful as the traditional spring day of old England. All the private race-stands were in gala dress; bunting lent colour to the scene; and the concourse of people in holiday attire boro testimony to the popularity of Hongkong's racing carnival. The ladies were in their trust becoming costumes, and looked radiantly beautiful as they paced the lawn in front of the race-stands, and eagerly dis- cussed the chancea of favourite horses or jockeys or indulged in the mild excitement of the sweepstake and Pari-Mutuel. jockeys in their gaudy silk jackets added an air of gaiety to the scene, which was one of the most entrancing that Hongkong has witnessed for many a year. The centre of the Racecourse and adjoining heights were crowried with Chinese, uostly sombrely attired in the prevailing fints of bluu affect. ed by the Chinaman, and divided their at tention between the races and gaming tabler which are inseparable features of all race meetings in every country and in every clime. His Excellency Mr F. H. May, C.M.G., the Officer Administering the Government, arrived promptly on the scene, accompani. ed by Mrs May and his A.D.C., Captain Hurly.

Eighteen horses started, and seemed to get away well. When they emerged from behind the trees, Bon Roy was in front. He had a lend of nearly a length at the half-mile post. Panjandrum came from behind Disclosure and reached Ben Roy's saddio. They raced together to the next furlong post, with Disclosure in close at tondance. The field were all strung out, but closed up at the turn into the straight. Panjandrum went to the front and fought the race out with Bon Roy. Disclosure challenged the leaders, and a good race home resalted in Panjandrum winning from Disclosure, with Ben Roy third. Fiscal was fourth.
