When the pony got into the part the gharry, of course, stuck,- the pony meanwhile breaking away and carrying on down into town, where it was subsequently caught, rather badly out about. Marriages not Made in Heaven.
The story of a Russian peasant's offering his wife, with a couple of pigs, for sale will not cause surprise in some of the remote: -districte in England which it will eventual. ly reach. The iden still holds in parts that auch a transaction is legal and proper. An instant was afforded in police-court evidence not long ago. The sale of wives' was common in England in the eighteenth century. It its latter half the re volting spectacle was witnessed of men and Pontefract hiring at Canterbury cattle pens and there auctioning the A Dud. partners of their joys and sorrows, ley man parted from his wife for sixpence; a Yorkshireman had Bradford billed ' and belled by the crior advertising the sale of his wife; and at Carlisle quite a literary flavour was given to such a ceremony. In one instance a woman who had thus been wold inherited property under the will of her first husband, and won her case in the law courts. The solicitors who endeavour. ed to prevent her doing so must have been of the stamp to which that one at Birming. ham belonged who had the impudence to draw up a deed whereby a man and woman agreed to cohabit after the former had deserted his wife.
The woman in the present instance has her remedy if she be of the Lutheran Church, which provides divorce for cruel and offensive treatment by the husband. Most governments have regard for marriages not made in heaven. Germany, Denmark, and Luxemburg release the wife if her husband has committed a grave crime. Greece acts similarly for wife or husband if either has known' of, and not disclosed, * plot against the life of the Sovereigns From this high ground there is a humorous declension. The wife is to be divorced if she attend theatres, balls, dinners, races and sports, or bathe in the company of men with- out the knowledge of her husband. Chili and Mexico suspend joint existence, but do not divorce; and the grounds upon which such separations may be effected are
trivial. Incompatibility of temperament is sufficient in France and Roumania; as it
is, too, in Brazil, where, at the end of two years, the parties may by mutual consent be divorced. In many countries continual drunkenness or cruelty, not necessarily If one serious, suffices to cut the knot. take the various laws of the United States, the marvel is that any two people remain husband and wife. In Massachusetts and Mississippi, for example, the use of opium or like drug invalidates marriages. —St. James's Budget.
THE NEW AFRIKANDER.
All thinkers are agreed that the ultimate destiny of this continent is magnificent. They differ in opinion in respect of its transitory changes, not its final form. That the Datoh And British elements here will eventually merge into one virile race, strengthened by streams of blood from the most energetic races of other conntries, may be confidently predicted; and the afrikander of the future should be-nay, it is safe to say will be-a grand specimen of the genus man.
The world has seen with admiration, not anmixed with dismay, the marvellous energy evolved by the fusion of races in America. Here, in South Africa, in the years to come, we shall witness the same thing repeated on a vastly larger scale, with the added advantage of the experience of the Americans to guide us, whos" errors we hope to avoid while striving to repeat their succes9.
At the close of their long and devastating war, the Americans awoke to the grand pos- sibilities of their country, and, proceeded to develop them with admirable skill and industry, Bat even the best of virtues have their darker rid, and their feverish haste to achieve material success the Americans -denied themselves time for eating; with the result that they became a nation of dyspeptics, a fact which has cost them
antold miscry and countless dollars. The evil is better understood and more generally avoided by Americans now; and besides, their scientific rese rob has provided an antidote in Mother Beigel's Carative Syrup.
That our people for years past have been subject to the same sort of danger, the ex- perience of Mr A. Dobet, of Clarendon Crescent, Richmond Hill, Port Elizabeth, will prove. Writing on the 19th September, 1903, to Messrs A. J. White (Colonial)" Ltd., corner of Princes and Diesel Streels, Port Elizabeth, Cape Colony (proprietors in South Africs of Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup), Mr Donet says:

LONDON, February 10.
A Paris telegram from St. Petersburg says that the Pallada has been gunk and the Re visan and Tzarevitch seriously dan- aged.
France has assumed the protection of Russians in Japan.
Patriotic demonstrations took place in St. Petersburg and elsewhere in Russia on Tuesday, but yesterday's news from Port Arthur caused an immense sensation and the populace was amazed at Japan attack ing Russia before declaring war. The streets of St. Petersburg were thronged with an excited crowd, and a Court Ball was aban loned.
Mr Hay has addressed a Note to the Powers asking if they are willing to join in A notice to Russia and Japan that, during hostilities and thereafter, the neutrality and integrity of China must be recognised.

Mr Chamberlain tolls us it is not well with British trade. Well, I tell you that the condition of the working classes has improved enormously during the last | twenty-five years ; that until last year many THE UNITED STATES AND THE of our manufacturers were unable to supply the demands for their manufactures or WAR.
Accept contracts to complete them in the specified time. That dull times are at hand is probable, for such slack times recur, and it is then we get time to overhaul our machinery and methods, and thus increase economical production. and enlarged. Kelly and Walsh,
Limited.
In taking up this revised edition of Mr J. Dyer Ball's well-known and popular work one hardly knows what to any. Mr Ball is so thoroughly well known as a man who has an intimate knowledge--more so the Colony perhaps than any other man
of things Chinese,' that what we could say would scarcely be giving to the public any more information of him than they already know.
His book, too, is as well known ne he is, and all that is practically left to us to do is to point out that in the edition we have before us is a work up to date and replete with descriptions of every thing connected with Chinese life and cus. toms. During Mr Ball's forty years' resid- ence in the Colony he has been thrown into close contact with the Chinese and has been given opportunities of studying every spect of their lives, a fortune that seldom fails to the lot of a white man. In his book he has written much from personal obser- vation, and in addition has availed himself of the knowledge of other writers. Con- sequently he has been able to produce a

and suffering to be anticipated is dreadful. Of what it is likely to be in a Naval combat we have a glimpse in the Report on the Chino-Japanese war by the Director General of the Medical Department of the Japanese Navy. A single shell killed two medical officers and twelve men, besides wound. ing 28 others. On land, too, the casualty-rate seems like y to be abnormally high, since it is doubtful whether the inass of Russian soldiers are sufficiently C
intelligent to fight well in very open order, while as for the Japanese, the Gourkhas of the extreme East, though the rank and file with a love for close quarters, and with re- are of high intelligence, they are credited
garding death in such fashion that even dis- cipline, perhaps, will not induce them to take the precautions against it which are considered right and legitimate further West. The amount of illness, on the other hand, may possibly be less than under cor- responding circumstances elsewhere, for both nations are habitual tea drinkers, and rarely in consequence drink unboiled water.
