SIMPLER DINNERS,
Short Menu with no Savoury, in Fashion.
MEDAL
·ADELPHIA ADITION
OAKEY'S
The latest tendency of the correct 'diner is toward shorter dinners, simpler
Mare,
The savoury is being eschewed by many of the givers of dinners at such fashionable restaurants as the Carlton, Prince's, and the Savoy, and the West End is quietly revolting against the habit of taking fish after hors-d'euvres, and of eating fruit after sweet puddings.
Ices are often tabooed, and at many dinner parties the leisurely joys of dessert are foregone.
*One reason, perhaps, for the shortening of dinners,' said M. Jaques to an inter- viewer at the Carlton Hotel, is the fact that just now almost the only thing for fashionable people to do after dinner is to go to the play.
Most of the theatres begin about eight o'clock; many West End people are up in town for only a few days spared from the hunting field, there are few roceptions and balls, and just at present everyone is so busy with Christmas shopping that the dinner hour is delayed, with the con- sequence that there is little time to spare for dinner before going to the theatre.
'Of course, no true gourmet would over eat fish in his hors-d'œuvres and then fish again after his soup, and many aro now omitting the one or the other. Snipe and woodcock are in season, and a favourite menu is composed of soup, fish, a bird with salad, something choice in the way of sweets and no ices,'
OUR GOVERNORS.
The following verses are by Josa Chin- chio-joss in the Singapore Free Press : —
We've had them bred in Colonies,
All distant from our own;
And some of these iu ruling us,
Some slight success have shown.
And some have boen stout soldier-men,
Who, on the whole have-passed.
But the best of the lot was bred on the spot,
And he of course was the last.
I
But now we're having something newK—
No step-by-step cadet:
No soldier who for servico dono
Got us as his brovot:
No unemployed from Hinterlands
Who needed a change of air:
But a diplomat crack from the Cul de Sae
Bred in the diplomats' lair.
We're seldom one which Downing Street,
Though Joseph did a deal
To break the spell of discontent
And bring us back to heel.
And so we cannot help but have
Misgivings deep within-
With Downing Street here and Downing

Where the plague do we come in?
But still, the issue is not grave,
There is not much at stake,
He does not on his work depend

Our Hongkong contemporary goes on to onumorate the disadvantages which British trade in the East suffers by reason of the fact that the British Government is not in a position to retaliate. We read of the sugar industry being injured by the legisla. tion of friendly Powers-in which con- nection our contemporary is quite wrong in its statement of the case as regards Hongkong sugar imported into Japan,- and of the disabilities which Japan and the United States place on British shipping as regards coasting trade. We do not defend these for a moment, and we have often condemned them in our columns, but, as we have shown on many occasions, it is the country which adopts such methods that is injured far more than the country or countries against which they are directed.
To judge from the result of the plébiscite, the Hongkong people appear to think there is a good deal in such arguments. Have they ever asked themselves how a policy of retaliation would work as against Japan? We fancy not, and this forms
