MURDER OF A SOLDIER AT SHPERNESS.

Suicide of The Assailant.

In Sheerness Garrison, on the 20th ult.. gunner belonging to the District Establishment, Royal Garrison Artillery, named Frederick Lane, shot Corporal George Purvis, Royal. Garrison Artillery, in the thigh, and afterwards committed suicide. It seems that Purvis was lying on his cot in a room in D Pasange, nearly opposite the Dockyard Church, when he heard a man say, 'I am as good a man as you,' and at the same moment he received a shot in his thigh from a rifle fired by Lane, who was standing near the sido of his cot. Purvis sprang up and closed with his antagonist, who, however, thrust him aside, and ran out of the room with the rifle in his hand. A gunner named Pilkington barred his exit, but Lase struck him over the head with the rifle, and then made for the bath-house.
