THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA..

The doctor on board the ship which took Lord Wolseley to India fifty years ago comes into these reminiscences. He was s Hercules in strength, and when, with bis wife and child, he was upset from a boat, he took one under each arm, and swam vigorously for shore; but, becoming-ex- hausted, he had to drop his child to save his wife. As they neared Calcutta the minute gun was being fired from Fort 'The William, and a voice cried out: Duke of Wellington is dead!'

In India he first commanded an outpost, and took three prisoners for disobedienco. They were from Tipperary, and the colonel before whom they appeared next morn- ing was also an Irishman, who had been curried about in China in a cage for the amusement of ntillions who had never before seen a European. The sc ne was very solemn, and Lord Wolseley expected that at least they would be transported, if 3 not sentenced to death. There was a

from an assumed "fury, and partly, because his vituperative vocabulary had come to an end, he jumpel to his feot, ups.tting thở, table, with its ink-bottle, papers, etc., aud rushed upon the prisoners, kicking hard at the nearest and crying aloud: "Gat out, Fagblackguards; never let mio see you again

The Hongkong Journalists' Association.' After some introductory remarks, the President said It is not my intention to inflict upon you a long inaugural address. At the same time, I should like to make a few remarks boaring upon the inauguration of this Association and the objects it has in view. We do not care for outside opinion, but it may be just as well, at the outset of our career, to dispel some of the mistaken notions that have come into existence with regard to us as an Association. In the first place, the idea is prevalent that we have handed ourselves together to make an onslaught on longkong society. As your President, I think I may say that such an idea never ocourrel to us. (Ap. plause.) As I understand the objects of this Association, there is no intention on the part of the journalists of Hongkong to indulge in aggressive action against any class or individual in this community. We have joined ourselves together because we feel that we have common interests which can best be served by unity of action. We have formed this Association because we

Mr P. W. Sergeant proposed the health of the President. He spoke of the high character which Mr Reid had gained in the Colony, and said that his departure in April next would be a distinct loss to Hongkong, and Far Eastern journalism.
