struck the cobra record. Ho Bays-On PIANO AND ORGAN BUILDER.
the morning of the 13th May last, just as we were sitting down to breakfast, the mi same and said he had seen a large cobra go into a hole under an Ipomea bush in the garden, not 20 yards from the house. We got the bush dug up, and after digging for about half an hour cune across a young cobra a foot long, who raised its hood at once; another stroke of the pickaxe brought four or five to view, and in 20 minutes we killed no less than 20 of an average size of a foot in length. After some more digging largo (cobra was unearthed, presumably the mother, and finally another small cobra, making a record of 22 cobras in half an hour. I was present the whole time and inyself saw every oné dug up and killed. I was curious to know if this was the usual
size of a cobra family and wrote to a lead- ing authority on the subject in Madras for information. He told me that little was known of the domestic life of the cobra, but that he quite thought this was a record, I ought to add that three weeks previously we had killed a large cobra in the drawing
room.

her adversary; and, in the end, England would not dare to allow it, much as she If, however, would, perhaps, like to. Japan is only partially and temporarily defeated, this would mean that Russia would be obliged to maintain a very large army in Manchuria and Corea for many docades, which would seriously impede her freedom of action in other parts of Asia and in Europe. Morcover she has not the means herself, and could hardly procure them from others, to open up either Man- churia or Corca, both of which are rich in products. A victory over Japan would, therefore, be of little use. At any rate, the Japanese, by what we saw of them from 1894 to 1895, and again from 1900 to 1901, weem hetter prepared and better equipped than the Russians; and, in Manchuria, they could count upon more than the passive as sistance of the native population. The mounted brigands, for instance, numbering many thousands, could be turned into powerful auxiliaries, if led by intelligent and smart Japanese officers, to harass the Russian lines of communication. It would then be exactly the opposite in Corea. There the people sympathise with Russia and hate Japan, as the oppressors who have raided the country ever since the Sixteenth The Century and the last time in 1894. attitude of the British Government in the question reminds one of her thirty-five years' masterly inactivity in regard to Afghanistan.
