"I warned him before I went, us plainly as I could speak, that me not being at home was not to make the slightest differ- ence to his time for coming in, and he pro- mised faithfully that he wouldn't be a winute later than half-past nine. I let him give me a kiss and off I started.
"I'm quite prepared to admit that I stayed on later than I had intended to do.
You know how it is when you meet rela- tives; one word leads to another; there's a row before you know where you are, and you can't very well leave in the midst of it. When I reached home (I'd been going over on the way what I should say to him if he complained of being kept up), I let meself in with the latch-key, and the first thing I noticed was no light! Not a speck of light anywhere. I made me way somehow into the sitting-roum, and after knocking over nearly everything in the place, I man- aged to find the lucifer matches. When I realised that he wasn't there, my first idea was to burst into tears, but I could see directly that wouldn't be much use, so I just sat down in the easy chair without taking me bonnet off and waited.
"Eleven o'clock struck, and he never came in. Half-past eleven and no signs of him. Twelve o'clock struck, and then I began to get mad. I could see it all. He'd guessed that I should stay on late; he was out with a lot of men that were no use to him; he'd come in presently reeking with tobacco-smoke. Presently I began to make up my mind that I wouldn't cudure such conduct on his part. I'd learn him a lesson that he wouldn't casily forgot. There was a cabrank down in the main- road, and I decided that I'd go straight
and back to my sister's; l'd knock her up. I'd tell her that all I'd been saying about

The old ironclad Nephine, which was recently sold out of the Navy, was be- ing towed out of harbour on the way to Bremerhaven, where she is to be broken
up.
She drifted across to the Gosport shore, passingunder the bows of the Victory, which at the time was swinging with the ride, and had her baws pointing towards the mouth of the harbour.
At this point
the set of the tide-carried the Neptune clóso in to the port side of the Victory, and, after
he had carried away the accommodation ladder, she rammed the old ship in the port quarter, making a hole ò ft. in 'depth and 2 it. in breadth, through which water was ad- The Neptune, mitted to a depth of 9 it. however, continued to drift broadside on until she was brought up by the rain of the Hero. There she was secured, and atten- tron was concentrated on the Victory
The bringing up of the Neptune across the bows of the He was due to a skilful set of seamanship on the part of the com-
oding oflicer of the latter vessel. Seco ing that the bows of the Neptune were pointed to his midships he slipped his cable and drifted astern, with the result that the Neptune drifted across his ram, but so gently that no damage except to paint work was done to either vessel. The Victory was immediately placed in dock for repairs.

On the following day, Admiral Sir John Ports- Fisher, Commander-in-Chief mouth, made a general signal commending the officers and crew of the Victory for the very creditable manner in which they act ed in the difficult position in which they were placed, and for their promptitude and i ability in doing all they could to save the old ship. At the same time, Rear-Admiral R. F. H. Henderson, C.B., Superintend- ent of the Dockyard, issued a memorandum to the riggers congratulating them on their smart work in docking the Fictory, and upon the ability and intelligence generally displayed by the stati.

JAPAN'S LONDON MINISTER SPEAKS.
Not Apprised of Japan's Intention.
LONDON, January 9. Viscount Hayashi, the Japanese Minister in London, has been interview- ed by the Press. He stated that it was impossible to say at present whether or not Japan would send a reply to Russia, With regard to the ultimate issue, the Minister said that it would be going too far to say that all hope of peace was abandoned.
negotiations about some now points, which have been raised, will be transferred to St. Potorsburg. Both in Berlin and in Paris, the best informed circles assure us that any warlike measures takon by Japan in South Corca would not be a case of war for Russia: If the Russian answer is re- ceived favourably in Tokio, Admiral Aloxieff will start at once for St. Petersburg.

These two men had already fought a twenty-round draw at Yokohama, and the bout was awaited with interest, From the jump up to the second round Lacey led, for in the second round he dropped Layton with a right on the jaw. Taking no time Layton sprang to his feet, only to be again rushed almost down through the ropes, per medium of a chop on the neck. In the third round Layton warmed to his work, and mixed it consider- ably with his opponent. In the exchanges he scored ovor his taller antagonist, and soon wiped out the lead established against him in the earlier rounds. The footwork of Layton was smart, and he had a good guard for the face, although leaving his body open. I was treated by various doctors, but nothing they prescribed gave me real relief, the 22nd day of January, 1904, at 3 o'clock, and you may imagine, therefore, how nt their Sale Roomis, Ice House Street, grateful I feel that I became acquainted with your preparation, which, in my case, has proved invaluable.
Yours faithfully, GERTRUDE L. CLARKE. - Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Oil contains all the essential curative principles of the oil without the nauseating oil itself. Thanks to the great scientific discovery 82 above referred to, the valuable extractivo 19 principles ate entirely separated from the 63 oil and combined instead with a rich full- bodied wine, to which is added peptonate Gof iron. The result is a liquid which is at
once a tonic, tissue-builder. and a won derful nourisher. For all kinds of wasting 180 | disease-incipient, consumption, debility, exhaustion, etc.-Stearns Wine of Cod 1 Liver Oil is acknowledged by the medical O profession to be an ideal remedy, completely 1 superseding ordinary cod liver oil or ita
