be absorbed at her own request, but not yet. When the pear is ripe it will fall. Meanwhile can you blame the friend of liberty for keeping his mouthe open?
Mr. Briton Riviere, a high authority on the beauty of animal forms, has raised a lament over the passing away from London streets of the last relic left them of nature's charm. The horse is being superseded by motor traction in its varied forms. Steam engines and Petrol motors are pounding, throbbing and stinking in our highways, while the graceful and innocent horse disup- pears from our midst. The horses them- selves probably do not agree with the artist, for London streets, are cruel to their hoofs and their labour is severc. Municipal authorities will not Agree, for it costs London £100,000 a year to clean up after the horse, and as for artistio opinion, we cannot go back to the stage coach because it was more picturesque than the omnibus. The horse will find his place, but that place is not the streets of a city where evil odours and the pest of flies are among the most fruitful sources of disease.

that her forces in Manchuria arc about four times as large as they are. Japan has not more and no less interest in Manchuria than the rest of us': but the absolute independence of Corea is in- dispensable to Japan. The map shows that Corea is a dart aimed at the heart of Japan, and as surely as Rome was compelled to crush a hostile Carthage, 80 surely must Japan fight rather than tolerate a Russified Coren. England will support Japan. France will give Russia fair words but nothing more, and Germany will sit on the fence, and not come off worst in the scramble.

NOVEL READING.
On the occasion of the annual distribution f certificates to the successful students at the Working Men's College, Great Orinond. street, the Principal, Professor A. V. Dicey, delivered his customary address, solecting Novel Reading' as the subject for discussion. Ho said it might be sup posed that before such a gathering as that he would say that novels were narcotics, and that novel reading was a most dangerous habit from which all of them ought to abstain, and that it would do them nothing but harm. All that, he knew, was the right thing to say, but there were two re- asons which prevented him saying it. The first was, that from his youth up he had been a confirmed novel reader (laughter);| therefore, he was not really in a position to deal with very great severity with tho fault of novel reading, though he knew it had been thought a considerable defect. Then, also, he had a little doubt as to the truth of the charge of the great evil done by lovers. He had ocasionally met with

There can no longer be the slightest doubt that in Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Ol medical scionce is endowed with a remedial agent which is of the greatest value in every kind of wasting disease-in fact, in every ailment for which cod livor oil has hitherto boon the recognized medicine. The reason of this success is not far to sick. Cod liver oil itself, even in its most refined condition, is not so- ceptable to delicate stomachs, being very nauseous, oril-smelling, and difficult of assimilation. I have great pleasure in recommending Stearns Wino of Cod Liver Oil. My little girl had eaten nothing for nearly three weeks, and after taking a few doses of Stearns Wine of Cod Liver Oil she was able to eat heartily; also my husband, after suffering with influenza, found great relief after taking Stearns' Wine. (Mrs.) HEANEY. In the case of the child, Stearns' Wine of Ood Liver Oil acted both as a tonic and an appetizer, assisting the digestive organs in the process of food assimilation as soon as the patient had received from the remedy efficient strength and vitality to take solid Dourishment. Being pleasant in flavour, Mrs A. G. Hills and
