PROPHETS OF EVIL.
Ja every age there has been an abundance of prophets, and the things they have foretold have generally been of a disastrous character. Yet still this old world of our wags on more or less merrily, and support a larger number of people in a greater degree of corefort than at any former periol.
Now here is a proplet of evil who discourges of that sleeping sickness which first appeared on the west coast of this continent, and is spread ing in all directons--a dreadful malady, truly, one which to the present has defeated world's science-speculating as to the probability of it being the appointed means for the extinction of mankind.
Seeing that is new and mysterious disease i has so far attacked only Negroes, and has killed only a few hundreds of that racs, whereas mallpox has killed hundreds of thousands of every race, it is difficult to appreciate this gloomy prophet's opinion. Perhaps the prophet suffers from indigestion; in which case he would do better to cure himself, by taking a few dose of Mother Seigel's Syrup, than disseminating bis gloomy ideas. Indigestion not only pre- vents food from nourishing us; it converts it into poison which contaminates the whole system, depressing the mind, constipating the bowels, impoverishing the blood, and punishing the unfortunate patient with severe pain at the chest after eating, headache, drowsiness, and other symptoms which complete his misery.
Among the many people who know thesO facts from experience is Mr H. Henegan, of Crafford Street, Port Elizabeth, who, in writing to Messis A. J. Whito (Colonin!), Ltd., corner, of Prince and Diced! Streets, Port Elizabeth, Caps Celony (proprietors in South Africa of Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup), says: It is now two years since 1 first used Mothor Boigel's Curative Syrup, and I rejoico to tell you.(as! have told my friends ever since) of tho 1 can never forget good it has done for me. the pain and distress I suffered, and my wretch- ed condition when a friend persuaded me to try your Syrup. I had consulted several doclors and taken their medicines without obtaining any relief from tho paius in my chest and back, Often I was compelled to neglect my work, being weak and quite without energy. To my friend's earnestness in recommending Seigel's Ian Syrup I owe my present good health.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Iliolo Charta which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
