THE FREIGHT MARKET.
In their Freight Circular, dated 19th inst., Messrs Lamke and Rogge wrote:-
The freight market is unchanged, and next to nothing is doing. Bats of the ban- dliest size and the most suitable type con- tinue unemployed for the reason simply that paying freights cannot be procured. Not only do rates rule disastrously low, but there is any how very little business trace- able; there is an unusual scarcity of cargo in all the principal directions, so that dif ficulties are being experienced also in mak- All this ing up occasional berth cargoes. accounts for quite a number of steamers being laid up.
Vory few enquiries after tonnage have been on the market and a very small char- tering business only has resulted during the fortnight under review, principally in coal- freights, as follows :---
From Hongay to Penang at $2.00 per ton, from Kuchinotza to Hongay at $2.00 per ton, from a Southern Japan coal port to Hongkong at between 81.66 and $1.50 per ton. Details of reported fixtures are as por appended list of settlements.
From the rice ports nothing is doing for prompt. For the Saigon trade, to coin- mence some time in January, German 8 s. Emma Luyken, about 2,150 tons cargo deadweight capacity, fitted with all China coast trade requirements and Hongkong Government passenger license supplied by owners, has accepted a 6 months' time- oharter for untive account as low as $5,000, -per month.
From: Quang Chau Wan, (Cochin-chinny, to Kobe, a boat is reported fixed for salt at $2.50 per ton, whilst rates locally for cargo to Japan ports are no botter than 11 to 10 cents per picul, and at that the sup- ply is exceeding the demand.
