Breaking through the windows at the sides, the flames crossed the narrow lane to the North and caught the warehouse of Messrs Wylie, Hill, and Co., which was stocked largely with manufactured wooden goods, and these were soon all ablaze. The opera-- tions of the Fire Brigade, who were almost immediately at work from Buchanan-street, could do little or nothing to stay the destruction of the inflammable material which filled both warehouses, and it was not until the contents of both had been reduc- ed to aslies that attention could be given to the saving of the buildings. That of Messrs. Wylie, Hill, and Co. rose to a height o fair storeys, and was surmounted by a tower. This ornamental structure was supported on iran girders, and it was the only part of the framework of the buildings that was destroyed. The girders became red-hot, and then, yielding to the superincumbent weight, they fell pieceines!, without causing other serious damage, Immediately to the North was the entrance to the Argyll Arcade, and ovor this was being erected a new tea house for Stuart Cranston (Li- mited). The building, almost as high as the burning structures, was surmounted by a steam crane supported on a huge woeden framework. The

THE NAVY VICTUALLING
SCHEME.
Charon writes to the Sydney Brening Neves an account of H.M.S. Royal Arthu's recent trip to Singapore. On the way the now victualling scheme came into forco. Of it ho says:-on October 1 the new vic- tualling scheme came into force, the scheme which tends to turn the vertable old sen dog, Salt-'orso Jack, into a well- - looked-after_and spoon-fed boy. At one Time 'Jack' was allowed three meals a day-breakfast at 5.30 a.m., dinner at 12 -noon, supper at. 4 p.m. Anything else he wanted between times at a 'stand casy' he had to procure for himself out of the Now he is allowed five meals,
canteon.
or, rather, five times per diem ho is allow. ed to have food; but he does not get much more than before; it is now more evenly divided, although several luxuries have been added. First of all, Jack gots a cup of cocon at 4.30 a.m., and supplies his own bread; then breakfast at 8 a.m., tea or coffee, tinned milk, pressed beef (this used to be a recognised stand-casy,' during which Jack 'always had a bite out of his own pocket); then dinner at 12 noon, the allowance of meat being some- what decreased; at 4 p.m., 'afternoon tea,'
my word; at 8 p.m., supper.
The luxuries added to Jack's fare consist of tea, coffee, jam, marmalade, milk, and there is a rovision of the routine and allow. ance of s.It pork, compressed beef, presory- ed mutton. Vegetables are now provided— compressed vegetables and evaporated pota- tous. Now, out of a supply like that, a good cook would make a very dainty menu for the rollicking, rowdy, happy-go-lucky, devil-may-care sailor, and that's just what he says; and why don't they supply the cook and gear to cook in? There is plenty of room for improvement yet. Extra cooks and utensils, and perhaps waitresses in white aprons, serviettes and tablecloths may be added. As Jack says, in his own way, Strike me, Bill, if I ain't a bloomin' duke, all of a suddent Strange to say, though, the more one does for the British blue the less he doos for himself; and now he is too lazy to take all the extra food and cook it. Undoubtedly, if one was to cook
it for him, he would eat it quick enough, but it's too much fag to cook all them luxuries.'
When the compressed vegetables were served out, there were many looks of sur- prise, and, instead of getting dried carrots, etc., heads of cabbage, a small, hard block Is that all for of stuff was served out. our mess?' and then a roat of laughter. This was the cause of great interest and amusement. When the cube of stuff was put in a mess, kettle full of water, and the lot placed on the galley fire, about 200 cager faces watched developments, and, much to everybody's surprise, it did swell. and became a very decent substitute for the real thing-tasty and sufficient. Like- wise the potatoes were watched, but while the canteen will supply decent spuds Jack will have them in preference. He is sore- ly disappointed at the decrease of the only decant gation supplied, and that is tho allowance of cocoa is only two-thirds its original size, and that was small enough- it was only just enough. Now it is spoilt, and the unfortunate mess which is served last gets plenty of liquid, but very little
eubstance.
