Time 4.30 p.m.

Scene. The Dustypore Polo ground in May. The khaki-tinted plain extende in all directions to the horizon, broken only by the flat-roofed mud-walled bungalows of the station. The sun, though fairly low down in the horizon, burns like an in- candescent light. Round the pavilion a score of ponies are drawn up, their syces santting listlessly on their shady sides. The goals of the polo ground are marked off with white and red flags drooping moura- fully in the warm still air. The players begin to arrive.

Captain Keene (Honorary Socretary and prime mover, pinning list of games on blackboard). Well, I wish they would look sharp, or we shan't get our six chuk- kers. (Looking at his watch) Why it's

twenty to five already.

Slacker (of the Police): If I'd only known they were all going to be lato like this I'd have had another quarter of an hour in bed.

Captain Keene: What, you don't mean to say you sleep in the middle of the day, do you?

Slacker (stretching himself): Reyther, what do you think? I wouldn't go withou my midday siesta this weather for anything. Captain Keene: I can't understand how you can find the time to sleep.

I find my time too short for all I want to do.

Flacker: Oh, yes, I know you, You're

one of those energetic chaps who want to be always doing something. I'm jolly glad I don't live in your bungalow. I once lived for a few months at Umballa with poor old Smiles of the Sappers, who was killed up in Chitral. He was one of those restless men, poor chap, who had always got something that wanted doing. and ho could never let anyone else rest 1254 either. I tako my. oath I never got a..

Got a parade or kit inspection or something on,

Captain Keone: Confound the chaps. Why couldn't they let me know sooner? I'm afraid we shall hardly be able to raise eight players.

Major Stiffe: Oh, yes, here comes a whole lot of fellows.

Keone, I can only play two chukkers, as my grey has gone lame.

There is a certain amount of desultory galloping, the game being complicated by difficulty in seeing the whereabouts of the ball owing to the dust and growing dark- ness. The Mild Young Subaltern occasional ly darts meteor-like across the field of play.

Major Stiffe (who has got a clear run, and is going quite fast for him): Look out there; don't cross. Look out. Don't.

Count Von Bulow, the Imperial Chancellor and Prussian Premier, and General Von Gossler, the Minister for War, have both admitted the existence of the evil, but have declared that it is diminishing and strenuous efforts were being made to entirely suppress it, the necessity for which was recognised by none more than the Kaiser.

Returning to the attack the Amphitrite team pressed and Liley was successful in beating Kow, and scored. The Naval men kept up the attack, but did not score again before half time was sounded.

After the interval the Amphitrite team still attacked, and the game was very ex- citing. All the play was confined to the Club's goal, but sterling defence play saved the Club again and again. The Club man- aged to clear and raised the hopes of their supporters by a dash down the field, only to be sent back again by a long kick. The gamo finished without further scoring. For the Amphitrite Sproat was good in goal, Parker and Easkins played safo games, while the whole of the forwards, without palyed dashing, fast games.
