A

A Thrilling Experiènce. --

The typhoon which visited Japan a week or so ago (says the Kobe Chronicle of Oct.. 13) appears to have spent its full force in the China Sea, and one of tho vessels in- fortunate enough to be caught by the gals when at its height was the Kajah, of 3,634 tons, commanded by Captain J. Clingen. and laden with sugar from Sanisrang for Japan.

The Rajah left Samarang on Thursday, Soptember 24th, with its cargo in baskets and cases, and encountered the typhoon when off Formoss on Sunday morning, the 4th October. A few hours previously the Rajah had passed a foreign sailing vessel hove to, but the latter was not spoken. The storm lasted little more than twenty-four hours, though it was, of great violence, for when the wind, was st its hoight the Rajah was considered to be in danger of foundering. For several hours" continuously heavy seas swept over the port side, carrying away wood and iron fittings, parts of the upper decks, and one of the lifeboats. The awning deck on the port side was lifted bodily by wind and sew and carried over-board, and the bridger.

At the height of the storm, at 430 o'c'ock on Monday morn- ing, when the glass had sunk to the unprecedented depression of 28.15 and the centre of the typhoon was passing over the ship, the Rojnh was more than once- considered as lost. Under the force of a hugo sea and terrific winde she heeled over until her bridge on the starboard side was- completely submerged. Nothing of the ship could be seen forward by the officers on the bridge for the heavy sens and sweep-- ing spray. The intense blackness of night was relieved by an occasional flash of *sheet lightning to the eastward, but this was considered a sign of the approaching end of the storm.

The Rajah pulled through without serious mishaph to any of the crew, and with the damage already mentioned in addition to that done forward, where the force of the sea was chiefly felt. Long Voyage from Hongkong.

Eighty days out of Hongkong bound for a South America port, still in the Chins sea, flying a signal of distress and short of provisions, was the plight of the French bark Conetable De Richmont, Capt. Rault, when the Pacific mail steamer City of Pek- ing, en route to Honolulu, fell in with the vessel, says the Hawaiian Advertiser of the 11th Septembor. The Peking left Hongkong on September 2nd, and at midnight of September 4th, saw a bark-rigged vessel showing red lights as a signal of distress. The Peking rounded to, and the stranger dispatched a boat to the steaner. When the small craft reached the liner Capt. Rault told Capt. Robinson that his vessel, the Richmont, was unable to make satisfactory progress and that eighty days had alrondy. been consumed on the voyage to South Americs. He was short of provisions, and asked

Resented by the Grand Duchess

of Saxe-Weimar.

About a month ago a brief cable an nounced that the Grand Duchess of Saxe- Weimar had fled to Switzerland to escape the tyranny of her surroundings. A Berlin despatch says:--

'Three months ago the Grand Duke William Ernest married Caroline, daughter') of Prince, Heary of Rouss XXII. Their return to Weimar after the honeymoon in the beginning of June was marked by po pular rejoicings. A few days afterwards the Grand Duchess Caroline suddenly and unexpectedly left Weimar and wont to Switzerland.

Many reports are in circulation as to the cause' of her departure. A statement that there was a quarrel with her husband in discredited, because it was a love match.

The

young couple are understood to be devoted to one another, and the version generally accepted is that several elderly female courtiers who have been influential at the Court of Saxe-Weimar for many years attempted to tyrannise over the young Grand Duchess, who celebrated her 18th birthday recently.

'The Princess, who is gay and unconven- tional, resented the supervision of the old ladies, who wanted to dictate to her regard- ing her personal conduct and matters of etiquette.

When she rebelled, this induontial cli- que appears to have made trouble for her, and the Princose, finding she was a slave at her own Court, took fight to Switzerland.

The role played by the Grand Duke in not clear, but it appears that the overbear- ing courtiers are more than a match for him. "One report says he remained neutral during the conflict, but accompanied his wife to Switzerland to show his agreement with her views. According to another ro- port, the Grand Duchess's departure came as a surprise to him. He took the next train to join her and difficulty. A third version is that the and Grand Duke is still at Weimar

telegraph poles were blown down in the outskirts of the city. In Singapore itsolf the greatest damage was sustained by Harmston's Circus Company. The wide- spreading marquee, 175 feet long by 120 feet broad, was completely destroyed. The gale swept the tent aloft, broko the poles, caught up the seats and Aung them nearly a couple of hundred feet away. The stakes were wrenched from the ground, iron stanchions wereenapped in two, the five-inch maats broken into bite, and the canvas covering was torn into ribbons. The des truction of the marqueo was completed within a minute. When the storm had Julled, the ground was found to be littered with debris; rows of scate and benches wore spread-eagled through the strips of what had once heen the canvas roof. Lamp. posts were strewed about, and all the paraphernalia of the circus was spread around. Nothing remained of the marqueo and its contents but wreckage. Tha moorings of the tent over the menagerio held fact, but the canvas was ripped to shreds. Altogether, Mr Love, the mana- ger of the Circus, estimates the loss at $3,000.

It was the duty of the Inspector, among other things to see that the Heung Lane was kept clown and clear, and it was sug gested that the object of offering this bribe was to get the Inspector to go slow in respect to the Lun On shop and their duties as to keeping the lane clear and clean. The prisoner, by way of explanation, said that his master told him to take the goods and give them to the Inspector.
