by the Rev. E. Kollecker, the Superintend- ant, who gives the following little bit of in- toresting history:-When the Berlin Mis- sion commenced work in China and sent out it first Missionaries to the Canton Pro- vince in 1882, a good foundation had al- rendy been laid by the Rev. A. Hanspach and the Rev. F. Hubrig.

The Rer. A. Hauspach had to overcome. great difficulties when he started Mission work in 1855. The Foreigners were much more hated in those days by the Chinese than now. Mr Hanspach was many times wounded and robbed on his preaching tours through the Canton Province. In trying to make friends with as many Chinese as possible, he opened many Schools, support- ed by his numerous friends in Hongkong. He soon found that the opening of Schools in the villages-(since 1862)-was a good way of removing the hatred and suspicion of the Chinese as it necessitated his often visiting these villages and caused him to coine OR ON SMALL | acquainted with many of the inhabitants.

He always appeared ass benefactor to the Chinese children and though some may have abused his kind- ncas, others have highly appreciated it. His zeal and energy in Schoolwork inust have been great indeed, as in a few years he established 150 village schools. They were scattered throughout the Hak Ka country in this Province and he visited them all and examined every child himself. The examination days musť” have been apprecisted by the youth, for Mr Hanspach showed them pictures, which they had never seen before and ex- plained them. Besides which all the children, who had learned diligently their lessons, were rewarded with some presents and they liked the gifts of the hated Fo roigners very much and were glad to receive knives, pencils or handkerchiefs etc. Mr Banspach did not always and overywhere gain the favor of his follow-labourer, the Rev. OCCIDENTAL HOTEL,

The Schoolwork not only helped the Mission cause but removed a great deal of Chinese suspicion and led the people to become little by little more accustomed to Foreigners. How inuch more are the Chi- nese acquainted with Foreigners and their customs now than they were thirty years- ago? Many things have worked together to bring this about, but certainly School- and Missionwork have had a great saare in it, especially in the country districts. If Schoolwork in those days helped to forward ·

1061 Mission work and to establish peacefully Foreigners in the land and thus benefit- ted both Foreigners and Chinese, how much more in our days? The Chi nese are now more than over convinced, that western School routine and discipline are superior to the Chinese. When a mar of so high-a-position as the Viceroy Chang Chi Tung feels the necessity of exhorting his country men to learn and distinctly ex- plains how and what to learn from the Fo- reigners, then we may be sure, that this feeling is spreading far and wide all over the country. The conditions, under which the peaceful people of the interior have to live and work are far from being satisfacto- In several districts they look in vain for the protection of the Mandarins against the unlawful agitations of the Triad Society. great brutality in compelling the people to join them. The total amount of money raised for various Christiau pur poses was over 80,600.00.

MORE DESTRUCTIVE THAN WAR,

Ignorance of the cause and nature of human' alents, and of what best to do when attacked by sickness, a responsible for greater loss of lifa, and infinitely more prolonged misery, than the most desolating wor ever waged. Wara beak bat, rage dercely, subside, and there is peace once more in the land, but everywhere and always there is a proportion of the people who are sick and ailing, who cannot properly sustain their part in the competition of life, and whose time is passed in satering pain, from which they per

eive no way of escape oxcept by death.

In all ages the wisest and noblest of mankind have exerted their mental power to the ntmost to avert, so far as may be, the suffering and was tage of humanity, and they have been rewarded by a large measure of success. The evils wo deplore, great as they undoubtedly still are, havo cen enormously diminished by their efforts. Many modes of treatment formerly in high re- pate have been prove by modern science to be positively detrimental to patients, while remedies have been discovered of such wonderful efficacy that the cares they work would have been sc. counted miracles in a darker and more supersti. tious age. The foremost place among these dis. ease-dispelling life-savers umat be given to Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup. For thirty-ive years that great remedy las boen doing its humane work in all parts of the world. No other medicine is so mach esteemed, nor likely to be while people voluntarily write of it in terms sach as those employed by Mr Isano T. Sihiya, of Enganjini, Sneezewood, P.O., Griqualand East, Cape Colony, who, in a letter dated 10th June, *1903, says: I am convinced that but for Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup I should not be alive to- day. Some years ago I had a bad fall from ray horse, and sustained a great shock. I lay for a long time on the ground helpless, and when ass- istanes arrived it was found that I had severely uprained my spine. After a while I recovered somewhat, and was not greatly troubled by my accident until after I entered upon my present duties as Forest Guard for this district. The work at that time was very hard, the people be- ing unruly and giving much trouble. I had to be on horseback the greater part of every day, and very soon my back began to trouble mo again. My kidneys were affected and caused me dreadful pain. Many times I was obliged to dis mount from my horse and walk, leading the animal behind me; for I was not in a position to A doctor whom I consulted give up my work. informed me that one of my kidneys had been displaced, and was otherwise injuriously affected. For three years I suffered in this way, and none of the medicines I tried benefitted me in the least. But one day a friend gave me a little book to read, and advised me to try the medicine describe therein, which proved to be no other than Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup, I followed) his advice, and to that fact own the good health now enjoy.. I am comident that 1 could not have continued much longer to endure the ter rible anguish with which I was afflicted before resorting to Seigel's Syrup.'

Testimony such as this must convince even the most sceptical; yet let it not be forgotten that Seigel's Syrup is the unrivalled remedy for indigestion and of the numerons complaints which arise from that malady. As regards my family, writes Mr C. F. Merspor, of French Hoek, Paarl Division, Cape Colony, 15th June, our house 1903, wo keep Seigel's Sirup as doctor. It cured mo of liver complaint. I have recommended it to numerous people, and always with satisfactory results.'

Humanitarians look forward to a time when safering shall be reduced to its lowest possible limit the goal alike of the best politicians and physicians.
