A GOOD RAILROAD STORY.

One Day of Duty.

"No, no more railroading in mine," said the hungry reporter as he tilted his chair back and elevated his heels on the desk that the city editor called his when he was there. "There are some things in this world I'm not adapted for. That's one."

The rest of the "Late Watch" gathered around with exolamations of amazement and surprise, and he continued ;

You see, I once applied to a division su- perintendent for a job and was assured 'my application would be considered the very first vacancy that occurred. Then I waited. The Buspense was not especially trying to me, but I could see I was wearing on the friends with whom I was boarding conside rably.

One day, however, the "caller," the mau that rounds up the trainmen whan they are wanted to go out on a special, came around with a note requesting me to call at the superintendent's office. Of course I complied with the request, and was told they wanted me to act as assistant agent for a day or two at a place called. Beaufort, or something like that.

I wanted to know if I would have time to

go and pack my grip, but they seemed to think such a delay would

This train don't stop at Beaufort, young feller," said the conductor, as he pocketed iny pass and proceeded calmly on his rounds. I would have liked to have asked him what I was expected to do about it, but his countenance was co stern and forbidding. I did not dare.

Wo were rapidly nearing my destination, and something had to be done, so I inform- ed a brakeman of my predicament, and he very kindly volunteered to ask 'Fat y Duff' ́ to slow down a little at Beaufort and let me off. I presume he did so, yet if there was any reduction in the speed of the train it was too slight for my unpracticed eye to detect. The brakeman encouraged me, however, and as there appeared to be no other alter- native, when we were nearly abreast of the platform, I let go and dropped.

"I'm sick and tired of this business," he said. The work's enough to kill a mule, but it's the injustice and lack of apprecia tion that makes ine hot. You can't pick up a paper without seeing a lot of frot'. about the heroism of locomotive engineers and the terrible responsibility that makes train dispatchers hump shouldered before their time, but never a single, solitary word about station agents. Why, to read the papers a person would think an engineer went through life with his eye glued to the rail and a death grip on the reversing lever, and that the train dispatcher had to put in all his spare time sopping his head with hair vigor to keep from turning gray in a single night. But look at the facts.

Any track walker can tell you that an engineer is asleep more than half the time when out on the line, and that the only way to call his attention to a slow flag or a stop signal is to heave a rock through the cab window, while as for the train dispatcher. we all know what he is a petty tyrant with an eight-hour trick whose most arduous duties consist in rawhiding us poor wretches out on the line, bulldozing us into sending him a regular tribute of fruit, fresh eggs and butter. Heroism! Responsibili ty! Well, if it ain't enough to give a person a distaste for strong drink!" An he disap- pearod in the direction of a saloon about half a mile down the road.

The conductor was lying on his hack under a car fixing something about the air-brake. I managed to gasp out that the train dispatcher wanted him for orders. "Tell him to go plumb to h−-1 !" shouted the conductor, and then calmly continued his labor. As there seemed nothing else to be done I started back to the station to deliver the message, and had gone but a short distance when the engine passed me backing up to the office. It was going too fast for me to board it, so the conductor and engineer had been waiting ten minutes or more when I eventually reached the station.

"If it's all the same to you, partner,' said the conductor, with freezing politeness, "we'd just as soon get out of here. We've get families at the other end of the run, and 'ud liked to get there before they grow out of our rememebranco,'

I was afraid of the conductor when I told him this. His jaw fell, and for fully a minute he gazed at me in round-eyed horror, then rushed from the office and yelled to the engineer: 'Git a move on yerself: Git out of hero before he has another fit!

After that it Was comparatively while. I made a feebla quiet for effort to understand something of the clas sifications, but soon gave up the attempt as hopeless. One or two lots of freight and express came in, and a couple of trains passed without accident. I was bevinning to think I was getting on to the business, when the agent returned. He looked more careworn than ever as he sank wearily into

the one chair the office afforded.

Well, how you makin' it?" he asked, and I stated so far the progress seemed Batisfactory.

Next he looked at the way-bills, and wanted to know if I had unloaded that cow Fot,

"No," I answered; "not yet."

"Not yet!" he shrieked. "Great Scott, man, what does Sections 4,389 87 and 88 of the Revised Statutes of the United States, and Section 2, Chapter 3, of the Act of April 3, 1878, say 7"

I was about to confess my ignorance, but he stopped me.

Speaking in the House of Commons in July last, Lord Cranborne (now the Marquis of Salisbury) referred briefly to the Man churian question and in such terms that it is quite evident the British Govern ment is not prepared to make Russia's presence there a casss helli, and will not even support Japan should that volatile nation precipitate hostilities over churia. The revenue collected during was the largest on record, Hk. Tla. 2,592,260. Mr Johnston gives three causes for this (1) the general improvement in trade; (2) the now tariff; (3) the transfer of traffic from junks to steamers owing to the placing of the Native Customs under the control of the Imperial Maritime Customs. There were no special features to record in connection with foreign imports, whose total value was Hk. Tls. 16,500,000; there were noticeable increases in Indian cotton yarn, tinplates, pig lead, raw cotton, kerosene oil, and white sugar, while the trade in cotton piece-goods was stationary. It is very satisfactory that the trade in exports at Canton continues to expind. The steady depreciation of silver has influenced this branch and stimulated ex- ports to such an extent that, us regards one or two of the principal staples, the supply was not equal to the demand, and both native and foreign merchants engaged in it have had a fairly remunerative your. The increases are chiefly in cassin lignea, mat- ting, and silk.' Very high prices had been paid for both raw and waste silk, although there is no appreci-ble improvement to report in the quality, and the Chinese are not likely to listen seriously to complaints in this direction so long as they can sell their silk as fast as it is produced. The matting demand was good, although the high price of straw necessitat- ed an advance in that of the manufactured article. The export of cassia lignea show- | ed an advance of 1,100 per cent; but the greater part of it formerly went by junk and is now sent by steamer to Hongkong. The export of ton continues to decline; in ten years it has fallen from 65,0:0 to 24,000 Hankow and Foochow, are being supplant- piculs., Canton teas, as well as those from ed at home by the products of India and Ceylon.

The amount of shipping entered and cleared in 1902. showed a large increase, due mainly to the large number of coasters which brought rice from the north.

WHAT THEY SHOULD DO. We only ask our readers to send a privato letter to us-Dr. Williams' Medicine Com- pany-Helborn-viaduct, London-and we. undertake to prove to them beyond all doubt that Dr. Williams' Pink Pills have saved the health of many women, who but for them would bo miserable invalids. More. They are capable of giving relief unspeakable to thousands of women who, either because they cannot afford to rest, or because their modesty keops them from complaining, suffer in silence month after month. It is especially to these women that we appeal. We send Dr. Williams' Pink Pills post free for 2s. 93. to any address. We gladly answer in strict con- fidence any letter of enquiry. We promise that if any woman doubts the value of the pills we will send absolutely unquestion-occurrence for some one to be burned or able proof.
