(From Our Own Oorrespondent.)
LONDON, September: 187 -
The death of Lord Salisbury has deeri expected for so many days that it caused no sensation, although the great states- mun held a very high place in the sympathy and resteem of Londoners. His brusque, business-like manner and his koon intelligence commended him strong- ly to the dwellers in the heart of the
Empire, who felt that in him was man fitted to cope with emergencies, and one who would not allow himself to be led away into side issues to the neglect of the really important points. a striking personality, it was curious how comparatively little he was known to the general public. I have seen him at a time when his name was in every- body's mouth, walking at midday past Charing Cross Post-office, and nobody recognised him. It would have given great satisfaction to the public if he

of the proceedings and the manner in which Madame Humbert was permitted to set the Court at defiance. To those accustomed to the grave procedure of English High Courts the methods of
French tribunals must always be in- explicable.
The sensation of the moment is the mysterious disappearance of a lady doctor from a hospital in the Gray's Inn Road,
She left the Hospital on August : 15, and all trace of her is lost at the gates.
She is described as a strong, healthy woman of 29 years of age, apparently perfectly happy, and of great will
power.
No ordinary explanation of this mysterious disappearance seenis to fit the case, and the police have been making exceptional efforts to discover a clue.

The theory which at the present time is predominant is that she was induc ed to go into the low Italian quarter which is close by the Hospital by an Appeal for medical assistance to some alleged patient and that then she was drugged. According to report a woinanı answering to her description was seen in a dazed condition in the company of a man on the morning following her dis- appearance. There are however a num- ber of conflicting rumours afloat, und up to the present the matter is a most perplexing mystery.

Dr Barton in a recent inter- view explained the construction of his ressel. It will be supported hy & projectile- shaped balloon having a capactity of 230;0-0 cubic feet and being 170 feet in length. The dock will be 123 feet long. When the motors are put in and the crew is on board, the total weight of the ship will be nearly seven tons. Three motors, each of 50-h.p., and driven by petrol, will work six propel- lors. The motors will be placed on aluminium bridges in the bows, amidships, and astern. For the purpose of raising or lowering the airship 30 seroplanes have been provided. These measure 15ft. by 3ft. An aeroplane is described by Dr Barton as being a rudder placed horizontally instead of vertically, enabling the vessel to be steered up or down instead of from right to left.
