FROM MOSCOW TO TIENTSIN.
During the Washout Season: Mr T. E. Henderson who arrived in Tientsin a few days ago, and who is making A trip round China, Japan and India, gives · us (China Times) the following interesting notes of his journey from Moscow to Tient- sin by the Trans-Siberian route.
Mr Henderson left Moscow on the 19th of last month and arrived in Tientsin on the 7th inst. thus taking 19 days to accomplish
the journey. He, however, states that bad the line been in its usual state the journey would have been done in 4 days. less.
Tho recent heavy rains have played havoo with the line which is so badly laid that a heavy storm is liable to displace the rails. The railway authorities have accordingly decided to relay this line, no matter what the cost may be. At Harbin there was a very bad washout, the lines in places being sunk right into the ground, în others thrown completely out of gauge.. This necessitated a stay there of three and half days in order to allow a large number of labourers to do the necessary repairs. This side of Moukden there was another big washout, the line being, completely washed away in places.

OR ON SMALL track was also in a very bad condition. In one place the passengers had to alight, and proceed by Chinese cart with their baggage for about half a mile through water, which was most of the time over the axle-tree. On the train Mr Henderson travelled by, the Wagon Lits carriages were attached, and Captain Daniels, D. S. O. (our now D.A.A.G. in Tientsin) purchased the first through ticket that was issued on the line, Mr Henderson obtaining the second. The accommodation is splendid on the Russian care; there is a piano and some very jolly evenings were passed in musical society. The food is better on the Wagon Lits than the Russian cars, though the latter are very good. There is no truth in the rumours which are circulated in Tientsin concerning the inconvenience caused by the Customs officials. All the way through, Mr Henderson's luggage was only inspected twice, and the officers who did examine it' were most polite and reasonable to the forty odd passengers who were on the train. Mr Henderson further states that between Tinkow and Shanhaikwan they intend building stone bridges in the place of those washed away. Along the entire route the country was in a very good state and pleas- ing to the eye, the rain having had a refresh- ing effect on the crops and grass land, The line in construction running around Lake Baikal (which one now has to cross by steamer) is going on at a rapid rate, and the experience gained in laying the other part of the line has determined the authorities to build it more substantially. At present there do not appear to be so many coming to the Orient as night he expected, the preceding train bringing only seven pas sengers and the train following only nine persons. Our train, says Mr Henderson, had 46 on board, 14 of whom were Chinese. The whole trip was delightful, the weather being nice and cool and the accommodation splendid. The German language is of far

A now theory as to the sun, which is creating some interest among scientists, is to the effect that the sun is a non-luminous world that emits not heat, but electricity, and this coming in contact with the electri- cal forces of our planet creates the heat, hitherto credited to the sun.

As lieutenant and commander of the Hardy in 1859 he was much employed against pirates off the Min river; and for 'these and other services Admiral Boglo received the thanks of the Chinese authorities and of all the foreign merchants. He was also engaged in various operations against the Taiping rebels in 1862, and as commander of the Hardy was present at the" bombard- ment, storming, and capture of Ning-po. That such do exist we learn from the Lancet which tells us that:-* Ap- Art from the pleasing sparkling qualities of cerated water, and its sharp, agrevable taste, there would appear to be a sound physio. logical reason why whisky with sodawater is preferred by the many to whisky with plain water. It would be entirely too tiresome- in such a commercially busy community as that of Singapore to worry with the ab- struse details of the sound physiological reason referred to by our professional contemporary. The plot, if a farcical comedy is possessed of such a thing as a plot, hinges on the doings of the faithless wife of one Pollard, an architect, and the faithless husband of Mrs Pinglet. The faithless wife and the faithless husband determine to have an cecapade to ease their own feelings and spite their respective other halves, and at the Hotel Mascot where they go to celebrate the occasion, such awkward situations occur that the naughty pair almost get bowled out." The husband of the faithless wife, and the wife of the faithless husband also get mixed up in a frightful entanglement, And it is the strange situations which all ind themselves in that causes the unbound. ed mirth which tho piece is always calculat- the best was not made of the many op ed to raise, As played last night, however, portunities for fine comedy work that abound, although those present appeared to derive much enjoyment from the efforta put forth. BAD LOOKOUT IN CANTON,
(From Our Own Correspondent).
CANTON, Sept. 22, Matters in Kwang Sai soem to be going from to worse. The strict censorate that the Viceroy has established does not let much news get through, but all that doos trickle out indicates that the situation
is becoming more serious.
What makes the situation so bad is that Tson is losing influence with his fellow- provincials, while at the same time many accusations are being lodged against him in Peking.
In the meantime robberies and piracies iu Kwangtung are on the increase and nothing is being done to stop them. The officials here are very much afraid of an uprising; the city gates have been closed an hour or more before dark during the last week. The guards have been doubled. The military commander in the Western Suburbs has been ordered to put his men on duty at four o'clock in the afternoon instead of when the watch is set, and to take every possible precaution. No crowds are allowed to congregate anywhere. It was reported a day or so ago that Tacn would be back into Canton the 12th of this,

Altogether the construction of the line would strike the casual observer as a study in spasmodic effort. When may an improvement be expected to take place? This is the question almost daily asked. For our part unless some- thing exceptional happens, such as another war, which, fortunately, is not at all likely, or the opening up of China or the commer. cial development of South Africa, which may take years to come about, we cannot see much prospect of any marked improve. ment in shipping for some time. The only thing which will restore the equilibrium between supply and demand is the cessation of orders for new vessels of the tramp des number of obsolete steamers, which, whilst they are incapable of earning money for their owners, are generally a source of weakness to the freight market.
