It was the Kling festival of Timeri, and the coolies upon Trai Estate resolved to celebrate it with all due reverence, includ- ing the firewalking, which to the European mind wavers between the supernatural and the foolhardy. Everything had been pro pared, and in front of the coolie lines at the Permatangpauh Temple, known to the wor- shippers therest as Drobudi Unumun Kovil, a large crowd of some two or three hundred persons had collected. They were all in gala attire, with the exception of the devotees, who were clad in a simple yellow loincloth.

In front of the temple a large tire of glowing charcoal had been prepared.

charcoal apparently had no more effect apou then than the contact of their bare

feet with the fire, and it is said that they Will all return to work after their holiday --as though nothing out of the common had

happened.

It may be that the feet of the men are chemically prepared to resist the attack of the fire over which they walk, but if such is the case the secret is unknown to Western science. The whole ceremony impressed one with an air of mystery, and we should advise those who doubt this simple account; to go and see for themselves next year. Then they will come away as much im- pressed as the writer.

A FEMALE · ADMIRABLE CRICHTON."

We take the following from the pleasant column of gossip which appears weekly in the Liverpool Post under the heading

From a London Club Window ':-

The engagement of Lady Constance Mackenzie to Captain Fitzgerald is widely circulated. She is certainly one of the most adventurous of modern muidens. Sister and heir-prosumptive of the Countess of Cromartie, she is now in her twenty-second year. Not only can she play the baz-pipes admirably, but in Scotland she annoys the Highlanders by wearing a kilt, for which, by the way, she has at least a certain am:- ount of historical precedent. At the Bath Club, she is champion swimmer, and has won races in the presence of the King. She can ride anything, from a Shetland pony to a rncolorse. She can drive tandom, un- icorn, dunkeycart, or motor with-cqual in- terpidity, and there is not a bit of courgeous humour from which she shrinks.

There is not a spice of mischief in her, from her beautiful hair, which she wears short and curly, down to her little feet. which can trip a danco-measure to perfect-- ion. Everything comes from sheer high spirits and from an innocent enjoyment

of life.

She has of late been travelling round the world and was a Durbarite guest of Lord Curzon. She was also at Cairo, where sho and Lord Cromer first fell out, and sub- sequently parted on the mutual under- standing which cements a lifelong friend- ehip. A girl entirely out of the common, she is worthy of the love of a knight-errant of old. Of her future husband; as yet all that is widely known in Society is that he is an officer and a gentleman. Though no date is yet fixed, the marriage will certainly * not be solemnized this year.

YEA; the Newriches' reception after the horse show the other night was select. There were only two common people there." "Who wore they 'Mr and Mrs Newriches.'

MRS Gwen: How does it happou that you are out of work?" Dusty Rhodes:

'AKE your relations friendly towards the defendant' asked the lawyer who was + All but doing a cross-examination stunt. my mother-in-law,' replied the man in the box. She ain't friendly toward anybody.'-

Don't Fool With It.

TT will not do to fool with a bad cold. Pneumonia, catarrh, chronic bronchitis, and consumption invariably result from a neglected cold. As a medicine for the cure of colds, coughe, and influenza, no- thing can compare with Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.

Mr Arthur Chapman, Chairman of the Club, in the course of a few remarks, said that the aquatic sports just concluded ranked as the most successful ever held, both as regards the interest displayed by the spectators and the large number of swimmers taking part. He also expressed pleasure at the number of little boys who participated in or attended the sports. It was a good thing for the sport of swimming to see so many little chaps taking an active in'crest in the carnival, and he advised them to train, so as to be able to uphold elder swimmers of tho the prestige later on, He congratulaled Mr N H. The most successful. aquatic sports held under the auspices of the V.R.C.. were concluded on Saturday afternoon, when most enthusiastic concourse of people show ed their high appréciation of the efforts of the swimmers by awarding unstinted ap- plause whenever it was deserved. At the time a crop is due this was particularly the case, there being always trouble between coolies and their masters because the former think they can obtain more pay by violence. So after nine years' service, in which he suffered consi- derably from malarial fever, the defendant came to Hongkongand, probably unaware at the time that he could not carry a revolver, continued to do so. On the day in ques tion he went from the Peak Hotel, where he was residing, and engaged a chair to take him to the Peak flagstaff. Ho went up, and while there took shelter for some time from a passing rainstorm. According to the admissions of the chair coolies, he had no quarrel with them, used no harsh words and never requested them to hurry.
