'braves' patrolling the country-side are anything like the name they bear and who deserve the attention of these robel bands only when they come provided with good fire-arms and a quantity of modern ammunition which would be particularly acceptable to their warlike stores. Then these will 'o the wisps combine, surround
the braves in some kind of ambush and, after decimating the lot, capture their arme and ammunition while allowing the remain- der to go their ways to give, whatever ter- rifying nows of the rebels they care to tell their superior officers, who are generally comfortably and safely ensconced within the walls of some strong and populous city. The enemies of H.E. Tsên Ch'un-heüen, knowing only the superficial aspect of mat- ters in Kwangsi, one and all think that they can do all the Viceroy has done and more-too. But as far as we jealousy and suspicion of H.E.'s future ·

ment on bail. It is quite possible therefore that ex-Marshal Su Yuan ch'un will be allowed to return to his native city in Kwangsi province where, like Wang Chih- ch'un he will probably be also placed under thestrict surveillance of the local authorities. With reference to the roport in a con- temporary that ex-Marshal Su has died in prison, this rumour may have arisen through the ex-Marshal having been allow. ed to leave the Board of Punishments, 9 it were, by the back door, to await a fur- ther commutation of sentence, so that when some person or other went to make a call on the ex-Marshal the next day and found him not there the visitor may have jumped to the conclusion that the old ex-General had been made away with by his enemies. At any rate so far no telegram has been received by ex-Marshal Su's relations here of his demise.
A Story of Curzon.
* A Friend of Lord Curzon' sends to Home paper an interesting reminiscence illustrating the Viceroy of India's indefati- gable industry, a quality, as the writer sug gests, which has been characteristic of his whole life. He was considerably my junior, but I saw much of him during his last two years at Oxford. His failure to secure & "First in Greats" was a bitter disappoint. ment to him, and he went almost at once on a tour through Egypt to Damascus and Baalbec. I was one day surprised to got a letter from him addressed from somewhore on the Nile enclosing the earlier pages of an essay he was engaged in writing for "the Lothian Prize." They were inscribed on the most irregular scraps of paper, and had heen penned or pencilled on "dahabiyehs" on the Nile, in camping-out tents, and on camel back, and they were followed by the remainder, of an equally patchwork. des. few cription. He asked me to verify quotations, giving all the references, and to have it copied or printed (I forgot which) and scut in under the customary motto. George Curzon-as he then was-swore me to secrecy, as he did not want it to be known that he had competed and failed. as he expected to do. As a matter of fact, ho won the prize. The subject was "Justin- ian," and I asked him afterwards how he managed to put his essay together under such unfavourable conditions.
He told me that he had spent a month at the British Muscum making notes, and had taken out with him a small portable library. Few University prizes, I imagine, have been won in such circumstances.

CORRESPONDENCE.
INTERMITTENT WATER-SUPPLY. To the Editor of the 'CHINA MAIL.' Robinson Road, Sept. 16, 1903. DEAR Mr Editor,-Can you tell me where the Water Authority is to be found? In my neighbourhood we have been on the intermittent system since the beginning of July, and the silly old lady has selected from 6 to.9 a m. as the most suitable time to cut off the water. Is it not about time that the Water Authority be put into fresh banda; nothing could be worse than the way it is run now.-Yours in the midst of plenty,

The Victoria Recreation Club oponed their Annual Aquatic Sports yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large num ber of gentlemen. The grand-stand and enclosure were decorated with flags and ferns, and the races, carried out by an able committee, went off very well.
The main event was the Half Mile Championship of the Colony, and oight A good start was made, and Mr N. H. Alves and the two Witchells went to the front, a few yards behind whom were Burros and Cooke. Got. ting out into the open water the tide carried the men some distance down the harbour. On rounding the buoy, which marked the quarter mile, the contestants were stringing out, with Alves, Barros and J. Witchell in the van. This order was kept until within forty yards of home, when Alves moved away from Barros and Witchell, placing about six yards between them. Barros and Witchell swam desperately to wipe out the lead obtained, but in this they were un- successful, and Alves won comfortably by about four yards. A hard stuggle ensued for second place between Barros and J. Witcliell, but Witchell managed to secure the verdict by a couple of yards. The win: ner came in for a round of applause, and the efforts of Barros and J. Witchell were also acknowledged. During the progress of this event the committee ran off a boys' race, and are to be commended for their action, as watching a half-mile race, when only the heads of the competitors are to be seen,-is likely to pall on the spectators.
A race which was responsible for a good deal of applause was the Veteran's Race, in which Messrs Bailey, Mook and Summer The distance was two lengths, and Meek started off at a fine pace. Lambert, representing the Dock Co., and Mr W. C. Jack, Consulting Engineer to whose specifications the vessel has been built, a number of gentlemen interested in this type of boat were prezent, amongst whom were the following: - Messrs. God- dard and Douglas, Mr Newman Mumford, Captain Innes and Mr Allison (of Butter field and Swire), Messrs. W. G. Winter burn and J. Andrews (of Fenwick and Co.), Mr E.-O. Murphy (of Bailey and Co.), Mesars, Sohwarzkopf and Stockhausen (of Blackhoad and Co.), and Messieurs-Mourer and Barhillon (of Messrs P. Lemaire and Co.).
TRIAL TRIP OF THE "THERESE.' { started.
The Therese left her moorings at Cosmo- politan Dock at 2.30 p.m., and after mak- ing experiments to shew the capabilities of the vessel's steering, either going astern or ahead, she proceeded to the measured mile in Kowloon Bay where a mean speed on four runs of 10 knots was easily obtained. The mean draught of the vessel was only sixteen inches, and it was suggested that she might have been put through her paces on the Racecourse last week. The prin cipal dimensions are:-Length, over all, 147 feet; beam, 25 foot; and the loaded draught with 110 tons deadweight will not exceed 3ft. 3in. The engines are of the horizontal direct acting type, having two cylinders 12in. diameter and 48in. stroke. They are fitted with independent Blake pumps and feed heaters, putting water into the boiler at boiling point. The hoiler is of the locomotive type, built for a working pressure of 160 lbs. per square inch, and it is covered with the latest Canadian Asbestos non-conducting material. A special pipe covering has also been in- troduced, reducing condensation to a
minimum.
Mr Brandela, as representative of the owners, and Mr Roger expressed them- selves as being highly satisfied with the Vessel, and we understand that Mr Jack has already opened negotiations, on behalf of Messrs E. C. Wilks and Co., with a view of obtaining a repeat order.
The success of this vessel will undoubted ly lead to further efforts in this direction, as although the vessel is specially desigu- ed for the Toukin River trade, this type of boat would find no difficulty in running at least eight months of the year to Nanning, and perhaps to Pesé, on the Wost River, to say nothing of the many shallow creeks in South China.
The Therese will leave for Haiphong in a day or two, in charge of Captain Graham Harvey, who has already taken several launches for Messrs E. C. Wilks and Co, and others to Saigon and Haiphong.
Football in South Africa
The British Rugby team, which has been doing very well in South Africa, is -reported to have defeated a fifteen repre- senting Pietermaritzburg by 15 goals to pil. This seems an incredible score; it is mora likely they won by 15 points to nil.
The War Office Again.
Three Chaplains, Church of England, Scottish and Roman Catholic, have arrived. says the Daily Telegraph, and proceeded to Berbera. Apropos of this, continues our contemporary, an amusing story is told. It is said that Major-General Egerton wired home for three Parson's pumps, and the above gentlemen were sent in execu- tion of order! The pumps have not yet arrived, and it will be interesting to know if they will follow.

Adelina Patti (Baroness Cederstrom) has given another great testimonial to the Apollo piano-player. She was so de- lighted with the instrument that was purchased by her last year that this
second testimonial is even stronger than the first one that she gave.
Mme. Patti says that the. Apollo never has given her the slightest trouble and that the new concert grand is one of the most wonderful and perfect piano-players that she has ever seen.'
Mrs Brown-Browne, having come at last to the conclusion that it was no use trying to stave off the attacks of time any longer, gave up pretending that she was a "giddy young thing," and assumed the graver airs and more dignified demeanour of a British matron. Her curse of conduct ob tained the goal of universal approval, but the attendance at her "At homes" fell off at once by about 50 per cent, which is not to bo wondered at when you remember that, in a climate of broken sleep and sudden death, men want to laugh whenever they can-to laugh at any price. S. had not succeeded in enrolling a single convert.
