Something for Mothers to Think About EVERY CHILD born into the world with an inherited or carly developed tendency to distressing, disfiguring humours of the skin, scalp, and blood, becomes an object of the most tender solicitude, not only because of its suf- fering but because of the dreadful fear that the disfigura- tion is to be lifelong and mar its future happiness and Hence it becomes the duty of mothers of prosperity. such afflicted children to acquaint themselves with the best, the purest, and most effective treatment available, viz., THE CUTICURA TREATMENT.

Warm baths with CUTICURA SOAP, to cleanse the skin of crusts and scales and soften the thickened cuticle, gentle anointings with CUTICURA ÕINT- MENT, to instantly allay itching, irritation, and inflammation, und soothe and heal, to be followed in the severer cases by mild doses of CUTICURA RESOL- VENT PILLS. (see below), to cool and cleanse the blood, are all that can be desired for the alleviation of the suffering of skin-tortured Infants and children and the comfort of worn-out, worried mothers. A single set is often sufficient to cure when the best physicians fail.

Millions of Women Use Cuticura Soap

CUTICUBA RESOLVENT PILLS (Chocolate-Costed), are prepared to meet the wants of delicate women, and sensitive children, and aro pure, sweet, and tasteless. They are beyond question the most successful blood purifiers and humour cures yet compounded.

THE STEAM TURBINE ON "THE SEA," izg

The progress of the steam turbino as a means of propulsion for, vessels seems to be steady, though not vory rapid. Every year sees it applied on a larger scale, and there are those who believe that before Jong wo shall travel on great liners driven by rotary ongines instead of by the to and-fro motion of a pisten in a cylinder. According to an editorial writer in The Scientific American the record of the steam-turbine has been one of unbroken success. He says: Had there been any failure recorded in the last four or five years of experimental work; had the steam-turbine shown any inherent and unsurmountable defeat rendering it unsuitable for marine purposes, the great steamship companies would be justified. in their hesitation to substitute the for compact and self-balanced motor the ponderous and at best but poorly balanced reciprocating engine. But no such obstacle has shown itself. It is true, the impossibility of reversing the turbine scemed for a while to be fatal to its in- troduction on steamships; but the present arrangement of installing a set of reversing

turbines on the same shaft with the main engine has removed the difficulty, and the distribution of the motive power upon three shafts has provided all manusvéring power that can reasonably be asked for. A recap itulation of the experimental period refer-

Length 121 Width 19.4", Depth 8′.6". red to will show how unbroken the success of the marine turbine has been. The very first vessel to carry it, the Turbinia, broke all existing records for speed, ste..ming at over 34 knots on hour. Then came the Viper and the Cobra, whose turbine engines placed then so far ahead of all existing torpedo-bouts in point of speed as to put them in a class by themselves, the 37 knots achieved by the former boat never having been surpassed in an official and properly cortified trial of any kind of vessel before or since. Then came the Clyde passenger- steamers King Edward and Alexandra, in which the conditions for comparative tests were most excellent, the boats being of ab.

18 knots an hour, will probably be seen in these waters during the coming internatio nal cap races, where they will meet another successful turbine yacht in the Resolution, which is driven by a turbine-engine of & purely American design. The latest success is that achieved in the turbine-steamer Queen, recently put in service between Calai and Dover, which made her first cross Channel trip at an average speed of 2 knots

Bn hour. She is to be followed by She is to be f other vessels of this type, which are now building for their different companies that ply across the stormy waters around Great Britain. So far from there being any now conditions prejudicial to the turbine introduced by building them in the much larger units necessary to drive a transatlantic liner, the very in- crease in size would bring about a larger

proportionate reduction in the weight and

been spaco per unit of power than realized in the vessels of 2,000 tons and

under, that are now running successfully with turbine-engines. Basing their cal-

oulations upon data already secured, it is estimated by the builders that in a vessel of the same displacement as the largest and

fastest of the present transatlantic steamers, it would be possible, by the installation of turbine-engines, to secure fully one knot more speed; and when we remember that the resistance of these fast vessels increases 978 as something more than the cube of the speed; it will be seen how great would be the actual economy of a large capacity marine engine. Furthermore, from the

DOUGLAS STEAMSHIP COMPANY, LIMITED,

Calcutta, August 28.-The Maharajah of Benares has written to the Pioneer, sending as well a copy of his letter to The Times, despatched by last mail, giving a full account of the transaction between him- gelf and Lord Curzon relating to the ivory farnitura presented to the latter in ox- change for double-barrelled rifle. The Maharajah's verson involves a direct con- tradiction of Mrs Smeaton's statements of almost every point The Maharajah THE ORDINARY GENERAL MEET- says. If I can understand my gain ING of SHAREHOLDERS in the and loss account I think I have had the bost of the bargain. As to the furniture above Company will be held at the COM 'PANY'S OFFICES, on SATURDAY, the being an heirloom, the Maharajah says If the Daily News or any of its correspon dents had enlightened me on the point, before I parted with it, I might have thought twice before doing so, and have saved myself the inaccuracy of telling Lord Curzon it was nothing of the kind, Mrs She was Smeaton is a stranger to me- my guest for a day, at the request of a friend, long-after the chair transaction.'

The Times of Ceylon says:-The rather long Calcutta telegram we publish on this subject indicates the interest taken in the matter in India. There was some old ivory furniture lying in pieces and neglected in Benares. It belonged many year ago to

a British Resident stationed there. Lord

Curzon got the Maharajah to send it to him, and the Viceroy gave him a rifle brought out from London and costing £80, more than the articles were which was valusid at. His Excellency spent another £40 in having the furniture properly re- stored. Meanwhile it was represented in London paper that Lord Curzon had made the Maharajah of Benares send to him a very valuable heirloom of the Maharajah's family in the shape of unique. ivory furniture, for which His Excellency Mr MacNeill pro. had paid a mere song. mptly asked a question in the House; and now the Maharajah has entered the lists in further explanation.]

For a fatal chapter of accidents which breaks all records the Village of Unter- Kortvelyes, near Arad, in Hungary, has just been the scene, according to reports just received. It destroyed in one day a whole family named Senk. drove with his wife to a nieghboring town, leaving his 14-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter at home. The boy was tamporing with a loaded gun when it exploded, and the barrel burst. Both brother and sister were killed instantly, and two servant maids in the room were mortally injured. The father, on being informed of the calamity, drove home with such haste that he collided with a heavy wagou and the carriage overturned, with the result that his wife was killed and he himself died on the way to the hospital.

Allahabad, August 28.-The Pioneer's London correspondent, telegraphing on the 26th instant, states that the Report of the War Commission shows that Lord Wolseley desired to send men to South Africa quietly, under various protexts, before hostilities broke out, in addition to mobilising forces at home to scare the Boers. Although his specific recommendations to reinforce the garrison in South Africa were disregarded, farger additions were made to the garrison before the war, in consequence. Lord Wolseley's evidence was to the effect that DOUGLAS STEAMSHIP COMPANY, Sir Redvers Buller's going to Natal and Lord Roberts's advance on Bloemfontein were strategically incorrect.
