Good Impression of the Chinese. The following interesting interview with the Earl of Lonsdale appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald recently :-
The Earl of Lonsdale when interviewed upon his arrival from China said he had attended the Coronation Durbar as the gnost of Lord Curzon,After the close of the ceremony he accompanied the Duke of Connaught to the Khyber Pass and then went on a shooting trip in Northern India. After this he went to Burmah, thence to Singapore and Hongkong; from the latter place he took a chartered steamer and wont to every part of China right up to the northern part of the Gulf of Pechili. At Peking he saw the Emperor and Empress Dowager, who, said his Lordship, were very kind to us. We were shown through the palaces and the Forbidden City,

In reply to a question referring to the condition of in ternal affairs in China, the Earl of Lonsdale said I heard nothing of any important disturbances nor of anticipation of them. I spoke to the highest authorities, including the subject, but there will be always a certain, the Emperor and the Empress Dowager, on
amount of trouble in the country, for it is full of secret societies. As to the future I may be wrong, but I saw no
chance of any special rising. When we went inland we had nothing but the greatest civility 'from the Chinese in the streets and elsewhere I went to China with a very different im pression. I thought the people were rifiraff and ruffians, but I came away considering WIRE them very fine fellows. As soldiers the Chinese are very fine. At Pao-ting-fu I saw about 10,000 reviewed. All their ceremonial drill was quite astonishing. The march past and manual exercises could not have been done better. The men moved like machinery. The quicker you rub it on, and the more you use it, the sooner the sprains will be gone. Even if Chamberlain's Pain Balm gets you back to work one day quicker than other remedies, it will pay for itself several times, but it generally cures a sprain, strain, or a bruiso a week before anything else, and a week's wages amount to a good deal to most people. Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lauone Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
