No. 10, QUEEN'S ROAD CENTRAL.

As foreign readers will be aware (says the Kobe Chronicle;, the Japanese Govern, ment has for some time past been desirous of developing the trade of glass manufac. ture, which in this country is still in a primitivo state. No plate glass is made, and quite recently the Government propos- ed to subsidise a good firm to the extent of 1061 yen 800,000 with the object of giving a start to the manufacture of plate-glass. As nothing has been heard of the matter of

intentions have had to fall before the in- exorable law of administrativo reform, though it is just as well that the plate-glass industry waits for private enterprise instead of manufacturers waiting for a Government 96 subsidy. It is said that the proposal has had some effect on the industry. The Iwashiro glass factory in Honjo, Tokyo, which is owned by Mr Iwashiro Toki jiro, is now being transformed into a joint-stock company with a capital of yen 200,000. The promoters have held a meeting and considered preliminary arrangements for floating the company.

QUEEN'S HOTEL, WEIHAIWEI.

SANITARIUM OF NORTH CHINA. SUMMER SEASON OF 1903.

HERE are (60) sixty bedrooms all with bathrooms attached.

A new Bar and Billiard-room, as well as a Concert Poom, are connected with the

Hotel and there is ample room for Dancing.

The Hotel is beautifully situated on a high hill and commands a full view over the inland, the Bay, and the Island.

Weihaiwei is noted for its scenery, healthy and cool climate during the Summer. There are several fine bathing beaches, good walks, and there is also good fishing to be. had in the Hay.

Intending visitors are advised to secure their rooms either by wire, or letter, so that they can be reserved.

One of the risks of taking a villa in the suburbs whose population is only less float- ing than that of an omnibus--is the kind of recreation in which one's neighbour may possibly indulge. Everybody in the land of the semi-detached has suffered from the young women next door practising their scales, but (says a London newspaper) sur- cease from this torture is generally possible by an escape to another floor. A complaint from Hampstead, however, reveals a now form of torture. There whole streets have suddenly found themselves at the mercy of a particularly powerful gramophone, which the possessor-either from a sense of erring generosity, or from the impossibility of bearing the whole force of the instrument 718 in his own room--places in the open window of an upstairs room with the mouth of the trumpet aimed into outer space. The early gramophones were quiet, if.a little wheezy- instruments, but of late perfection of mechanism has bestowed upon them a re- sonant-timbre which is infinitely more penr, trating than the sound of a street-piano. The result, for Hampstead at any rate, is that one gramophone provides music for at least two or three streets. For people who desire quict homes, or for invalids who have delicate nerves, this is a form of torture which custom can never render tolerable. The only hope for peaceable sufferers is that some gouty and irascible neighbour will hurl his solicitor at the cause of their devastated lives.

Time and Money. Sickness causes a loss of bth time and money. You lose the time and have the expense of medical atteudaric, entailing a double loss. This can be avoided by using some reliable remedy at the first stage of the sickness. The purchase of a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and' į Diarrhoen Remedy often proves a profitable investment, for, bị its use at the first appearance any unusual loöseness of the bowols, a Bevere attack of diarrhoea or dysentery may be averted, that might otherwise compel a week's cessation from labor.
