À LAND OF PROMISE.

In the not very remote post when Europeans looked to South Africa only for ostrich feathers a common practice for and sunshine, it was English doctors to order hopeless cases of pul- mouary disease to this country. When there is no hope at home try the Cape of Good Hope;' Keep below deck until you reach Madeira,' &c. How painfully familiar nch phrasee sound. Often the prescription succeeded; more often it failed. It is within the knowledge of everybody that the late Cecil Rhodes came here to find health, not fortnue, and succeeded in gaining both. But his experience was not the common one. The c meteries of South Africa are dotted with almost as many graves of Englishmen who came he e in quest of health as of those who were slain in battle or died of diseases incident to

warfare.

It is a fact, established beyond possibility of dispute, that no climate the world cau offer is sufficient in itself to arrest the progress of con- samption, though unquestionably it is a very im- portant aid to other treatment.

But what should that other treatment be? No question was ever more debated, or is still further from settlemont. We will not attempt to answer it, bat allow Mr Charles Rodgers, of Eest Loudon, to give a brief account of two illaesser from which he has suffered, which throws con- siderable light upon the matter.
