A youthful assistant-surgeon, who joined about the same time, was an extraordinary specimen of simplicity and ignorance of s cia. conventionalities. The subalterns were naturally enough, eternally playing pranks upon him. He took them, however, with such imperturbable good-humour that he became a sort of recognized and affec tionately-regarded plaything, and each and all of his persecutors would have promptly gone for an outsider who ventured to take a liberty with him. One harmless jóke that was played upon him was at Brighton, which was then a favourite cavalry quarter. He received a card of invitation to a dance from some titled lady. It bore the letters R.S.V.P. in a corner. Not having the faintest idea what these letters meant, he

Playfair thought he would like to get some of his own cigars so, she went quietly to his room for the purpose, Imaging his dismay on entering to find a complete wreck.
