BAD CRICKET.
Is County Cricket Declining ?
The County Gentleman lias a strong article on what it describes as Bad Cricket,' from which we quote the following-
le may, or may not, be true that public interest in County cricket, generally speak- ing, is declining. If it is true it is not diffi- cult to suggest at least two causes for the decline; if it is not true, it is difficult to understand why public interest in this kind of cricket should not decline. But prob ably that interest is declining, and for these plain reasons-first, because not all the so-called first-class counties play good Frickot: second, because first-class county cricket is no longer a game; it is a business. When once what ought to be regarded as a game, a recreation, a means of epending losure hours in healthful exercise, becomes merely a matter of earning money, then
ANGLO-AMERICAN STOES, there remains no particular reason why

But first as to the contention that not all the first-class counties play good cricket. Who will assert that all of then do When a team of cricketers engages in a match with another tean, the first object of both sides should be to win the Can anybody claim that this is ganie. always the first object present to the minds of the county cricket team? If so, how are the following facts to be accounted for? It is known that on a really good wicket
there is at least a probability that there will be a difficulty of finishing a match between two strong batting aides in three days. Ought not every minute, therefore, dur- ing which play is possible, to be utilis ed by the players in playing the game? But it is not so utilised. There is dawdl- ing in very interval; the in-coming batsman : takes four or five minutes, instead of two; to get to the wickets; the luncheon inter- val drags out into a length of time almost comparable with that of a City dinner; there is an interval for tea, which ought to...
be disgusting to any cricketer wanting to get on with the game; in short, the main point with many-first-class county teams CHINESE AMERICAN MMERCIAL seems to be to spend as short a time as possible in giving an exhibition of what may be called stage cricket,' compatible with the acquisition of a sufficient amount of gate money to pay their expensea.

-As our readers are aware, the Java-China- Japan Company was formed last autumn and is to be in working order at the end o this month, when the first steamer is ex pected to leave Holland for Java, arriving- in Japan about the end of September. A monthly service will be maintained at the commencement, and three steamers, each of about 5,000 tons, aro to be put on the now line.
As our commercial readers will remember, the present company was preceded by a branch service of the Koninklyke l'akot- vaart My, which was established a couple of years ago for trade between Java and Japan, but which was shortly afterwards discontinued. Despite this, however, the promoters saw the possibilities of the de- velopment of commerce between Java, China, and Japan, and being convinced of the feasibility of such a service, in 1900 dis- patched Mr Van der Burch to this country --and San Francisco to make preliminary inquiries. Unfortunately, when en route to Europe, Mr Van der Burch was drowned near Chicago, and the work that gentleman had done was to a large extent lost. With the help of his written reports, however, and from information obtained from other sources, three of the promoters of the new company, Messrs L. P. D. Opten Noort, E. Helding, and B. E. -Ruys, approached the Dutch Government and were successful in obtaining a subsidy for the proposed new line between Java, China, and Japan. By this concession, the Netherlands Government agrees to sub sidise the company in a sum of 300,000 guilders annually for a first period of five years; 250,000 guilders annually fora second period of five years; and 200,000 guilders five third period of annually for a years. The new company was floated on the 16th September, 1902, with a capital of 6,000,000 guilders, 3,000,000 of which were placed on the market and fully sub. scribed, the shares being allotted at par. The company is pledged by its agreement with the Dutch Government to maintain a monthly service betweon Java, China, and Japan, for which three new steamships have been built, as mentioned above. By the Government contract, the ports of call will be Batavia, Samarang, Sourabaya, Hong- kong, Shanghai, Kobe, and Yokohama, and homewards, Amoy, Hongkong, and Java harbours, though of course additional ports of call will be taken according to consign- mont. Moji and Nagasaki, at which ports there will be sub-agents, will probably be added at the outset.
One of the principal objects of the promoters in founding this line was the opening of new markets for Java sugar, which, after the withdrawal of the Brussels Convention, will be at a disadvantage on the American market. New fields must be exploited, and of these one of the most important is Japan. In 1896 this country only consumed 260 tons of the product, but in 1902 the amount of sugar exported from Java to Japan was 64,404 tons, and there are indications that this will largely increase. The three new steamers referred to, though built chiefly for freight, have large steerage accommodation for the transport of Chinese, and aro equipped to carry a small number of first-class pas-
sengera.
The directorate of the company consista of five members-Messrs L. P. D. Opten Noort, E. Helding, B. E. Ruys, Abram Muller, and T. J. van Haren Noman, with the head agency at Hongkong,
