I have already told the story,' said B..P.
A good story bears repetition,' said we. I told it yours ago in the pages of my old schoolpaper, Greyfriar.!
Thore are other boys in the world than Carthusians, we argued.
“Well, it's just a plain tale from the hills,' he said, growing reminiscent; and then slowly came the story of the Banerwal of the Tangi Pass.
It was in '97, and Sir Bindon Blood was going for the Bunerwals. These peo-7 plo land learned a sort of contempt for all enemies because of the splendid bounty of

On that ridge fluttered 39 standards of the Buner- wals, and all about it were stone breast- works occupied by their riflemen, while the swordsmen, nursing cold steel for us, wait- ed out of rango behind the ridge.
Then the guns of our Artillery began to speak, and for two hours shells screamed and splashed against the "sungurs" of the Banervals. We knocked them all to pieces, those breast-works, but the plucky Bunerwala, waiting till each shell had burnt, popped up from behind the shattered breast-works and began building them anew. Cool, well-plucked fellowa, I can assure you.
After a while our Infantry swarmed up the mountain side to the attack, and the

But they had to ex- pose themselves for this sort of business, and as our shells ploughed into them with frightful accuracy they had to withdraw be- hind the ridge. The standards were kept fying to make the silly little white men think the Bunerwals were still there, but in reality, they were beating a hasty retreat.

It was while our Artillery was ham- mering at the " Bungars" that I noticed three Bunerwals, armed only with swords, standing proudly in a "sungur. Their STEEL WIRE reply to the pounding of our guns as the shaking of glittering swordblades in the air, as though to encourage their fellows. At last a shell smashed the "sungur" to splinters, And wo thought our three Bunerwals had gone with it. But out of the writhing smoke leapt the three gallant fellows, and dashed straight down the mountain side as though to charge our climbing Infantry. As they came, however, one man swerved aside, and get- ting in a side path, disappeared abruptly over the ridge. At his heels, quick as a flash of lightning, followed the second man.
The third came on.

A CURIOUS CASE.
A very rare incident of what the Chinese term 'preserving sublime chastity' oc curred yesterday. A Eurasia: young lady of 19 named Li Sau Wan, on hearing of the news of the death of her betrothed husband, voluntarily made up her mind to leave her parents' house for that of her parents-in- law's with the object of devoting all the rest of her life in mourning for her deceased parents- betrothed husband and serving her in-law just as if she had been married and is now widowed. No amount of arguments could prevail against her in her deter. mination of adopting

A Kobe Opinion. The Kobe Chronicle, 'the editor of which is probably better able than any other journalist in the Far East to give an authoritativo opinion on the prospects of war between Japan and Russia, deals with the alarmist article, in the N.-C. Daily News referred to by us on the 27th ult. The criticism of the Chronicle appeared on the 29th ult., and, after analysing the state- ments of One who knows,' our Kobe contemporary concludes as follows :—-

Rent Rolls were made out for Survey Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, and for the Districts of Tung Chung nd Mui Wo in Lan Tan Island." The Rent Roll for the rest of the Territory is being pushed on and will be completo before the end of 1903.
The areas cadastrally surveyed during the year amounted to 11,715,81 acres, including 219,292 fields. These figures do not compare favourably with those of the preceding year, when over 11,000 acres were dealt with by a considerably loss staff, the reason being that the work during 1912 was confined to much more difficult ground, which consisted of the most hilly parts of the whole Territory.

Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa. ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet
3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
