THE SENSES OF FISH,

The old question how far fishes can feel, learn, and, after a fashion, think, ie discussed by Mr E. C. Sanford in the new number of the International Quartorly," His article, which bears the somewhat formidable title of The Psychic Life of Fishes, though not containing any original work, gives an interesting summary of a series of experimenta, chiofly conducted by Mr W. It is doubtful, of course, as Mr. Sanford points out, whether we are justified in interpreting the action of creatures so very different from ourselves, as indicative of the saine mental processes' whether, in fact, we can say they perceive and reason, because they do things which, in our fellow men or animals near ip organisation' to the human species, would be regarded as consequences of brain

THE Undersigned has received instruc-haved in the same way when food was present, while specimens whos olfactory nerves had been destroyed only took it when placed very near to them. Occasionally, however, they learn to use their eyes, as is proved by Mr Bateson's experiences with a rockling,

He began with the idea that tho fish could not see worms or other food, when thrown into the water. But one which had been kept for some months in a shallow tank, and con.. stantly fed by persons leaning over the top, now comes up to the surface, if hungry, and splashes there as soon as anyone ap pronches and will actually lift its head out of the water to snap, seemingly in recogni- tion, at a finger hel above the surface. That some fish can be taught to take food from the hand is well known, but, curious- ly enough, even this educated specimen 1604 seems not to have got so far as to re- cognise a worm swimming in the water, but only the larger presence of the person who fed it. As the rockling is a nocturrial feeder, it must be supposed, while in a state of nature, not to have seen its food, but the acquistion of this new, faculty suggests that, as these a e now fed by daylight, they niay gradually acquire the power of capturing their prey by sight.. FORMOSA OOLONGS.

The question of the production in Ceylon of tes corresponding to Formosa Oolongs, for which there is so valuablo a market in North America, has been before planters for some months; but no Ceylon planter has yet surmounted the difficulties of producing them, says The Times of Ceylon.” To obtain present good prices, or anything near them, the Ceylon oolongs" would have to be of the very best. India is to inake special effort, however; and Mr Larkin— who has previously urged producers in Ceylon to add this additional string to their bow-is becoming more insistent, as witness our London correspondent's telegram to- day. Mr Larkin has been extending his tea business in the United States considerably of late, and it can be easily understond.

be catered for. Mr Larkin is making Ceylon Tea for the [hings lively and Produce Committee in London, we imagine. A subsequent mail, will pro- bably bring out suggestions by that body; and details of the scheme for getting some expert Chinamen from Formosa, for Assam and Darjeeling, will be as eagerly awaited. Mr Fairhurst, when he addressed the Dim- bula P.A. in January last, declared that he did not believe that Ceylon would ever be able to produce the Formosa oolong : but that it could copy the inferior Foochow variety known as "suey kuts." Some - years ago he imported into Ceylon, to his after regret, some seed froin the Formosa trees, and the resulting trees reverted to the worst China type. This must rut be accepted as the last word on the subject, however. North America takes about 20,000,000 lbs, of oolongs, three-fourths of which are of the Formosa variety.

THE CHINA MAIL.

Hongkong, 5th August, 1903, SIE-I think the attention of the Autho. rities should be called to the disgraceful state of the first two hundred yards or so of the New Jubilee Road.

For some reason, Chinese have been allowed to use it as a stable, and I have frequently seen some 200 cattle tied up on each side of the road, leaving only about a couple of yards in the centre free for traffic, Litter has been laid down for the cattle, and this, with the dung, has formed a festering mass of filth, which in anything like damp weather makes pedestrian or This part cycle trafic most disagreeable. of the road is now broken up into deep holes and ruts, and though I have not sonally socd cattle picketed there since Monday last, the fifth still remains, and the road should be repaired,—presumably present condition. at the expense of those responsible for its

CRICKET MATCH.

No one was killed by the collapse of the stand at Perth, and only fourteen of the injured are dotained in hospital.

[The match referred to was probably one of the two annual matches played between Forfarshire and Perthshire. One match is played on the North Inch at Perth, the County Club pitch being in the centre of this public recreation ground. The match corresponds to the meetings of Yorkshire and Lancashire, and usually attracts from 10,000 to 16.000 spectators, special ex- cursion trains being run from Dundee and other centres of population. -E»., C.M. }

A WONDERFUL DISCOVERY. This is the age of research and experiment, wher allnature, so to speak, is ransacked by the scientific for the comfort and happiness of man. Science has indeed made gisht strides during the past century, and among the-by no means least important iliserveries in medicine comes that of Therapion, of which will be found in another particulars column. This preparatiolable ratent Medicines is unquestionably one of the most genuine and everintroduced, and has, we understand, been used in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert. Velpeau, Maisonneuve, the well-known Chassaignac, and indeed by all those who are regarded as authorities in such matters, including the celebrated Lallemand, and Roux, by whom fr was some time since uniformly adopted, and that it is worthy the attention of those who requiresuch a remedy we think there is no doubt. From the time of Aristotle downwards, a polent agent in the removal of these diseases has (like the famed phi- losopher's stone) been the object of search of some hopeful, generous minds; and far beyond the quere power-if such could ever have been discovered-of transmuting

the baser metals into gold is surely the discovery of a remedy so potent as to replenish

of the

comfirmed rond in the the failing energles of one case, and in the other so effectually, speedily and safely to expel from the system without the aid, or even the knowledge, of a second party, the poisons of acquired or inherited disease in all their protean forms as to leave no taint or trace behind. Such is The New French Remedy Therapion, which may certainly rank with, if sol take precedence of, many of the discoveries of our day, about whigh no little ostentation and noise have been made, and the xtensiond ever-increasing demand that has been created for this medicine wherever intro- duced appears to prove that it is destined to cast into oblivion all those questionable remedies that were formerly the sole reliance of medical men. Therapion may be obtained in

Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Oflico in Londou from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zoro of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet

3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 4 inches to the height given in the table.
