She brought special vases to put them in.. She always properly thanked him-for-the- flowers, and once, when she had known- him two months, she pinned one of his roses at her throat, and was surprised that he did not even appear to notice it.
They visited the theatre together, and one night she
spent an hour in drossing her hair. It was only by accident, to be sure, that an impertinent, tiny wave-fell over her ear, although it was decidedly on purpose that again she wore a rose-this time in the knot of her hair. He treated her with all politeness and chivalry, and between the acts he discussed the play and ordered an ice. But several times she found herself comparing him unfavourably with American men who had noticed straying looks, and she remembered how one friend, of the
INTCRITIES IN THE BLOOD.—We have seen. hosts of letters from people who have received great benefit from the use of Clarke's Blood Mixture. It cannot be too highly estimated, for it cleanses and clears the blood from all in- purities. This is a good testimonial from the Family Doctor, which goes on further to say: It is the finest Blood Purifier that science and skill have brought-to light, and we can with the utmost confidence recommend it to our subseri. bera and the public generally. For-Scrofula, Scurvy, Eczema, Bad Legs, Skin and Blood Diseases. Pimples and Sores of all kinds, its "flects are marvellous. Thousands of wonderful cures have been effected by it. She had really put it away in a bureau drawer, though just why she could not exactly tell.
At the opening of the fourth month he brought her a bunch of violets and a low, flaring-shaped vase to put them in. She called him a doar thing for being so thoughtful. The Colonial Secretary replied:-The Esholy of the staff recommended by the Commission which enquired into the Public Works Department has been appointed with the exception of one Assistant e gineer for maintenance work," and one overseer for roads inside the City. The increase of the staff recommended by the Commission was based on the assumption that a sum of nearly $800,000 would be spent annually on public works extraordin ary. With the large expenditure on water works, part of which are being carried out by a private firm, it is not contemplated that the Colony will be able to spend so much as was contemplated for public worke axclusive of water works. Therefore, a smaller staff than what was recommended appears sufficient.

A CHECK ON SERVANTS.
The first reading of a Bill entitled "An Ordinance to prevent intrusion by persons other than the servants of the occupier of premises into the portion of such pre- mises used as servants' quarters' was agreed to on the motion of the Attorney General, seconded by the Colonial Secretary.
as
The objects and reasons of the Bill, attached to the measure, are To check the growth of the habit at present largely indulged in by servants of introdu- eing into the quarters provided for them by their masters, outside coolies and others- who in most cases pass the night there.. The result-is-that these servants quarters are frequently overcrowded at night to an extent which renders the occupier of the premises liable to be prosecuted. This Ordinance makes it a punishable offence for outside coolies and other persons not in the employ of the occupier of premises to occupy, without his permission, quarters which he has provided for his own ser- vants only.

The fide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tido-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet
3 inches below mean sea level.
1
To obtain the depth of water on the tide: gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard, add feet 1 inchan, and on the gauge.at Jamer.
Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
