BATTLE AT SHANGHAI.

THE CHINA LIGHT & POWER

A Desperate Encounter. Thus the N.-C. Daily News of the 13th inst.: The sham fight on Friday evening was a great success. The various Com. panies taking part turned out well, and the operations were of a very interesting nature. The idea, as we mentioned in our issue of Friday, was that the Red Force was the advance guard of a larger force. which was to cross the Souchow Crock and 245

The Blue Force was supposed to be detach.

ed from the Shanghai Garrisou to prevent the advance guard from entering the Settle-

ments, and a Reserve was to be at the RacO Course at about 10. Many of the members

of the Red Force, however, forgot their instructions, and instead of trying to locate

which was supposed to be much larger than theirs, attempted to take prisoners and engage their opponents. For doing this the whole of the German Company, except a few who had already been captured, wero put out of action.

The Blue Force met outside the Country Club, and marched from there to take up various positions between the Soochow Creok and Bubbling Well Road. The forco was well distributed and the roads and paths were so well guarded that it would have been practically impossible for an enemy to get in without being scen. The two Maxims also held commanding positions, and it is mid that the whole of the German Company passed across an open space covered by one of these deadly little weapons. On the extreme right of the de- ! fenders there was little or no fighting, but in the centre, and on the left the firing was al- most incessant, and many tales were told about the gallantry of both defenders and at- tackers. As only thre round of ammuni- tion per man were served out everyone was keen on capturing one of the 'enomy' in order to rifle his pouch.

Almost at the beginning of the oper ations, Capt. Lanning, the popular com- mander of the Customs Co., loft his men and went forward a little way to recon- noitre. Unfortunately he went a little too far, and in spite of his protests he was Lieut. Lay of the made a prisoner of war. same Company was also captured by a burly Artilleryman.

Altogether the operations were the most successful which the Volunteers have ever taken part in. The timing was done ao perfectly that all the men had been dismis. sed before 11 p.m. and not a single hitch occurred throughout. Everyone who turn- ed out learnt something and most of them thorough y enjoyed themselves. The Blue Force succeeded in carrying out what it was. supposed to do, and Major Watson may be congratulated upon the success of the first ananæouvres carried out under his super- vision.

Mr Hickling preached from Acts iv., 28.: Men that havo hazarded their lives for the Lord Josus Christ.' Dealing first with the hazardous lives of Barnabas and Paul, and the sacrifices the Christian was propar- ed to mak when ho had decided to serve Jesus Christ, he called attention to the de- voted life of Christ on earth. It was the spirit of Jesus that enabled Barnabas aid | Paul to choorfully hazard their lives for the name of their Lord Jesus Christ. Who followed in their train? He trusted that his hearers that morning were so commit ting themselves, and proceeded :- It is a sincere pleasure to meet here the officers and members of the Hongkong Volunteer Corps. You wear the uniform of the King with honour to him, to this Colony and to yourselves. What does this enrolment, this uniform, this arduous drill mean? It means Defence, not Defiance. It means that where the righteous interests of the Colony and Empire are involved, you are prepared to hazard your lives. There was some conversation with regard to money, which the first prisoner said the deceased man owed him. and the deceased admitted the debt and said that he would pay it when he had the money. A quarrel en ued, and the second and third prisoners came up and assisted in an attack on the deceased man. Very considerable violence appeared to have been used. The deceased was kicked and hit with billets of wood, with the result that he suffered serious injury.

A crowd ga thered round, and when the struggle was over the deceased appeared to be badly hurt and the three men ran away. The deceased got into the divan and the police were sent for, and the man was taken to the Government Civil Hospital. There ho gave information which led to the arrest of the prisoners on the same day. Dr Bell found the man in a serious condition, operated upon him, and found that his spleen had been ruptured. No doubt, the doctor said, the rupture was due to a severe blow or fall. A few days later the man was dying and Dr. Bell Look his dying deposis
