The feelings of uneasiness were subsequ ently quelled when the commander of the Kum-Sung explained that there was no more difference between the significance of the words Sang' and Shing '-from a pure Chinese standpoint-than there is between the respective mennings of the ex- pressious Bo-Gobs and Be-Gorrah,' as used in another alien country. Both words Sang and Shing-signify ininensity, plenty, profusion; but Sung' is com- mon-place Cantonese while Shing" is Particulars and Conditions of the Letting by the high-flown dialect of the capital

inanent or otherwise, of which it will be
qurious to note, says a writer in the Sydney
Muit of Jane 17. The Japanese officers, KELLY & WALSH,
from the Admiral down, had evidently in mind one thing. They could not believe treatment of that after such effusive
themselves and ships the country could con- tinue in favour of treating thei. race as ⚫ undesirable' aliens. When in one speech Admiral Kamimura significantly expressed a hope that nothing would be done in any part of the British Empire to disturb the cortial relations existing between the Governments of the Mikado aud the King, ho obviously had our Aliens Act in view. Whatever may be thought of the attitude of the general public, it is certain that the politicians who support the exclusion even from the Thursday Island pearl-industry of the northerners were inconsistent in flow- ing with the popular tide of the past week. There probably never has been any real danger of a Japanese influx into Australin, Japan wants all her population, and however ready her people are to supply labour, it is only for a time, and the Tokyo Government usually sees to their return. Some such arrangement as Japan made with Queensland would have sutliced to prevent the flooding of Northern Australia without hurting the susceptibility of a race of which wo are likely to see and hear more. and more for good ur ill.

cured her.
Two years ago,' said Mrs, Webb, of South Ockendon, England, I had an attack of influenza. It left me for a long while an invalid. I was so weak and ill that I could not stand or walk. In order to get round my room I had to crawl on my Hands and Knees. A doctor attended mo, but for months I was he pless. In the mornings I used to crawl down the stairs without using my legs, and at ni, ht my husband carried me up again. One day, however, I chanced to see in a newspaper an account of a remarkable care by Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People. So I bought a box. * After I had taken nearly the boxful my I lost the former strength bogan to return. feeling of weakness, and my legs got better and stronger. A persevered in taking the pills, and was, I am thankful to my, soon able to walk all over the house.
I have been better ever since. This winter I am/able, for the first time since my logs become bad, to do all my house- work,

THE 'RUBI' AND ▲ JUNK IN COLLISION..
This was an action for damages brought by Kwok A Po, part owner of a Junk, against the &s. Nubi, in connection with a collision between those vessels which took place on February 9 last.
DO
Mr M. W, Sinde (Instructed by Mr H. J. Gedge, of Messrs Johnson, Stokes and Master) appeared for plaintiff, whilst de- fendant was represented by Mr F. H. Sharp, K.O. (instructed by Mr H. W. Looker, of Messre Deacon and Hastings.)
Mr Sharp, in opening the case for the defence, said that evidence would show that there, were
proper lights on the junk, and if the Court found that the junk had no light of any service it would not be necessary to consider whet her the collision occurred inside or outside territorial waters. If the junk was outside territorial waters she was statutorily to blame under the Junk Ordinance of last year for not having red and green side- lights. The Rubi was on a voyage from Hongkong to Manila. At midnight the second officer went on duty and during the next two or three hours of that watch the captain was partly on the bridge and partly
not.
At 1,45 a.m. the captain was called, according to instructions, when Waglan Light was sighted. He went on the bridge and changed her course for the light. At 2,55, when

the north-east head of Tankan Island was abeam on the port side, he was again called. There was at that time a few junks about, and from then the captain remained on the bridge, custom was, until he got into Hongkong, At 3.9 the captain changed her course from a course direct to Waglan to a course W. by N., on which the collision occurred. At 3.30 a dim light suddenly appeared, a length away ahead of the Rul
lightly on the starboard bow. One or two of the Rubi people seemed to have observed the junk simultaneously at this distance, and it appeared that the light was not visible materially before the junk herself. When the junk waS. scon, the captain im- mediately put his helin hard aport, gave bis engines full speed. There appeared to have been a period of about 15 seconds between the first sighting of the junk and the collision. The junk was seen to be going from starboard to port acris the Ruby's bows. The measures used by the captain of the Rubi were the correct measures to be used. If the junk had done the correct thing and given way a fow feet the collision would have been avoided.

the advantage is often with the visiting team. Certainly the visitors have always the best excuse if they desire to decline prof- fered hospitality, whilst a local man often feels it incumbent on him to offer the same, but cannot very well excuse himself from participating. The climate has brief al ims to consideration. Hongkong and Shanghai usually play their matches in weather common to both places, and neither

Fox, notwithstanding being partially In- capacitated, got six wickets for 83, and Ross three for 69. Most of the others had a try with the ball, but with little result beyond an addition to the score.
The Straits batting was an unknown quantity, and considerable interest was aroused as to how they would fare. With the wicket in good condition on the following day, it was hoped that they would make a good fight. These hopes were early diapol.

the small incidents which go on between the wickets. Whilst there is nothing certain in cricket, a match often appears to the players to be, or is actually, in hand while to the spectators there is no indication one way or the other how it is to go; and this feeling of the player is more frequently grunted to a bowler than to any one else. Times without number, I have had a good idea how a match was to end simply from feeling when one was in good fettle with the ball, and as if one were in good staying condition. I need hardly add that there are also occasions when the match will go against you in spite of everything, and then luck is blamed and cursed-want of skill, of course, never enters into the question. Everyone knows the tremendous value of 'IF' on occasion, and in some of the games I am now about to reminisce.' On the choice of men-after examination Hongkong has always had most difficulty of various interport teams, it looks as if in getting a representative eleven to do duty for the colony away from home; it cortainly has had the greatest variety of representatives, and this, I believe, is due to the fact that Hongkong Civilian oricket has been at a low ebb for some time.
This brings me to a rather important topic for argument-so important that I make no excuse for entering on it here. The decay of Hongkong Civilian Cricket as compared with that of Shanghai and the Straits is due to several causes. In Shang- hai cricket has a season of its own-suin- amusement line otherwise, except some feoble opposition in the way of golf. I write open to correction on this point. In Hongkong, cricket has to meet strong oppo- sition in football, golf and racing, not to mention a little shooting, yachting and other sports, all of which have to be crammed into the winter months. The Straits have cricket all the year round, and have not the opposition of these To the vast inajority, the glories of these sports that Hongkong has no one would dream of pushing football, for instance, in interport fights are denied. Many staunch the hot tropics to the extent it is carried in friendships have been formed in the course the bracing winter climate of Hongkong. In addition, Straits cricket has the of those contests, and, it might be added, enormous advantage of having the active with perfect truth, that teinpomry, enemies patronage of His Excellency Sir Frank have also been made, more especially when Swettenham-a most important matter--as

Hospitality is invariably unbounded, and only those who have experienced it can have an adequate idea of the cordiality of the reception ex tended to visiting teams. When one consi. dors the distance travelled to play a single match, or perhaps at most two, then out siders should be able to see some reason for it. A novel game of draughts was recently played in Rangoon, one of the players being B local expert. In place of the usual black and white draughtsmen, the novice used rupees and the champion used sovereigns, the understanding being that the draughts- nien captured on cither side during the ganie should be the property of the captor, except that the first two sovereigns should be ru- turned to the loser after thogame was over. Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been cumpiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during
the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be feat
8 inches below mean sea level,
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
