Just as the search for a short cut to a know- ledge of the Latin language has been generally given up as hopeless, except by The cranimer, so it will be found in the long ran that nothing save a systematic and somewhat prolonged course will enable even the quickest-wilted student to read and write Chinese with a moderato fluency.

The University of Cambridge hopes to catch the student young, und to carry him, without haste and without delay, through a three years' course, such as will give him a thorough grounding in the written language, and enable him, fortunate enough to find his lines laid in China, to graft on speedily and without difficulty a wide and business-like know- ledge of the colloquinl. One of his rewards will be the degree in honours. Many men, who either are not attracted towards a classical education or fail to see wherein classical studies are likely to profit them in possible commercial career, will, perhaps, be induced now to turn to Chinese, which offers practical and remunerative as well ** purely academic attractions, and will very probably soon take its natural place as ue of the important languages of the world,

The University of Cambridge has the unique distinction of possessing a large and extremely valuable Chinese library, such as would be sought for in vain, not merely in Europe and America, but even in China itself. Alrendy, too, there is a proposal on the part of oue generous donor to set aside a sum of money for the endowment of a scholarship in Chinese and it is devoutly to be wished that other benefactors will not be slow to further a cause in which British commercial interests are so deeply involved.

A little after dark on the momorable night Mr Burdett was called on dock by the wheelman who said that the wind wIJ increasing and there was danger of the able parting.

For three hours Mr Burdott directed the movements of the crew. The wind all during this time was from the north-west. Suddenly about half-past ten

night it changed to the south. In less time than it t-kes in the telling the son was chopped and a heavy swoll from the south was lashed into fury by the hurricane wind. The boat was unable to withstand the elements and when a huge wave swept over her every soul aboard was swept into the raging sca. A small duty belonging to the resol was swept off with the human beings. Burdett was the first to get his bearing and discerning the dory struck out for it, and caught hold of the keel. A few minutes

after all of the crow and the divers were hanging on the dory and for forty hours they battled with the wives holding on to the keel.

The most horrible part of the experience was the madness of two of the Datives. The sun was so hot that it affected their brains and they went crazy. At first they

tried to save them but were, so weak that it was impossible. Soon they becam violent and tried to fear the others from their hold uti

Inst of the natives who went crazy hung on for ovor three hours after his mind had left him, when he finally let go, he tried to struggle for over an hour in the water before he went down. Mr. Burdett and the survivors were at longth thrown upon the shore of a small island, and Bowlett Feribbled note to Captain Griffith, the Sonior Inspector in Capiz who, upon re- ceiving it from a native, hurried to his assistance in a bareta, finding on his arrival that the survivors were fit subjects for the hospital. Mr Burdett was moved to thehospital in Capiz, where for three weeks he was unable to move. On June 23 ha reached Manila and on the 3rd inet. sailed for Hongkong.

When the Culiao went down she had on board about $2000 worth of pearls and several hundred pearl shells. Mr Burdett is going to Hongkong to get wrecking ap- pamatus in order to raise his boat, if it can be done and expects to by back in Manila within three wooks,
