HOW LONG TO SLEEP.

The popular belief that men of extraord inary mental activity are, as a rule, light| sloopers, is not justified by the facts. What the just and right allowance of sleep may be, for the individual, does not svom to depond altogether upon the amount of mental or physical work done, and is to a considerable oxtent determined by In- heritance and idiosyncrasy. The idler and the pleasure lover often seem to sleep longer and more easily than the laburious brain- worker, and cases may be traced where a tendency to light or heavy sleep has run strong families, irrespectively of the occupa- tion or of the physical and intellectual activ- ities of individuals. The only safe guide in determining such a question is experience. If Good health and full intellectual offici- ency can be preserved by six hours' sleep, there seems no motive for making efforts, probably destined to failure, to secure eight hours. But care should be exercised that short sleep has not been the result merely

The occupations of the sufferer, both during the day, and more especially during the hour preceding bedtime should be carefully in- quired into. Most authorities, wisely, no doubt, recommend that the bad sleeper should break off his daily routine sometime before the hour of retiring to rest; that he should try the distracting influence of con- versation, a stroll, a novel, or a cigar, and that every effort should be made to prevent the overtaxed brain from pursuing during the night the well-beaten track of the day. A tepid bath at bedtime often acts well, whereas a very hot or cold bath is to many persons injurious.-- Bratth.

Mr Austen Chamberlain, replying to Mr Caldwell, admitted that the expectations on which the British Governinent had subsidised the Pacific stemmers had not been fulfilled. The present service to China and Japan is of very little advantage AB be said. The revenitu mail service, obtained from letters and packages going that way bore no proportion to the British subsidy.

The British Government had gone to the utmost limita in assenting to the renewal of the Canadian Pacific contract for five years, in the hope that the Atlantic service would then be an accomplished fact. Further quickening of the Pacific side had certainly made the route of real Im- perial value, but if these results, as regards the Atlantic end, were not achievel, it was unlikely that the British Treasury or Post. Office would agree to an extension of the contract on the present basis.

Without doubt, the children greatly benefit by this new ré- gine, and it educates them for their future life. Shyness, however, is almost an unknown quality, and a 'grown-up would get decidedly snubbed if he tried to talk down' to these small men and women, who generally possess charming manners. Their fashionablo amusement, at least for the girls, is dancing, and the receipts of many a charitable enterprise have been greatly increased by the know- ledge that some little lady of fashion was to lend her kindly aid and lithely dance for the help of others less fortunate than her bright self.

Meanwhile two of the officers summoned the Queen's two brothers from their home
