is of the greatest import- ance during illness and convalescence. A beef tea that contains the smallest amount of fat or is weakened by foreign ingredients often hinders, instead of helping, recovery.
Lemco (Liebig Company's Extract) is the strongest preparation of beef that science knows. It is quite free from the fat that so often spolls home-made beef teas. Keeps perfectly in any climate.

SLEPT TWENTY YEARS.
THE CHINA LIGHT & POWER
Marguerite Boyenval, 'the sleeping woman of Thenolles,' died on May 28, after remaining in a trance for twenty years. On May 21, 1883, she was thrown into a cataleptic sleep through fear of a visit from the police, and it was found impossible to arouse her. Dr Charlier, who attended the: case during the whole period, succeeded in causing sensibi ity in his patient by giving subcutaneous injections of sulphate of at- ropine. The feet were first affected and 245 gradually the whole body, as far as the neck, after which he could make no further pro gress, and ceased his treatment.

doctor is of opinion that the woman was
never conscious of what was going on around her, but Professor Voisin, of the Salpetriore, thought that at times she heard vaguely what was being said to her. Through the whole twenty years' sleep her respiration remained perfectly normal, though her temperature was a little above the ordinary. About five months ago the doctors saw signs of returning conscious- ness, and renewed their efforts to revive her. For the first time on May 27 she opened her eyes, and remarked, 'You are pinching me. She did not seem to dis tinetly recognise the members of her family
on awaking, but was able to answer Yes'

She took her mother to be her sister, and mentioned her grandmother, who died fif- teen years ago, Her memory went back to the time when she worked in a sugar factory in the village. When she fell asleep she was twenty-two years of age. During the whole of the time si ce then she has been artificially fed. She began, how- ever, to show signs of consumption, and wasted away to a skeleton. The progress of the disease accounted for her death. Doctors from all parts of the world visited Thenolles to see the sleeper, and the case was declared to bo absolutely without precedent in medical science.
A TRUE STORY.
England is a long way off and lfty-three years is rather far in the past; still there are a few people among as able to recall what the old country was like in 1850, the year of the in-
cident to be related.
At that time there lived in a detached cottage near an English cathedral city a very eccentric bachelor. He had formerly been wealthy; but having dissipated the greater part of his fortune, he went to the other extreme, and not only became a teetotaller but almost denied himself the necessaries of life. For years he kept bim- self a prisoner in his cottage, his only companions being two ferocions ball dogs named Beer and Whisky.
Two tramps, who chanced to hear that this singular recluse was vory well off, and that he was never without beer and whisky, resolved to rob him. Accordingly they one night broke into the lonely man's cottage, and immediately discovered that the Beer and Whisky therein were of quite different brands than they had expected to find. One of the tramps, fleeing in mad terror from the dogs, fell into a mill stream and was drowned. His companion, badly bitten, just managed to climb a tall fence; but fell over it and fractured his skull, so that he died the next day.
The incident caused much excitement at the time, and it had scarcely subsided when the local shop keeper reported that the only answer he could obtain to his knocking was the growls of Beer and Whisky; whereupon the police broke into the cottage and discovered the old man-end. The inquest was remarkable for a dispute which it occasioned between two doctors. One maintained that death was the result of fright at the recent attempted robbery; the other, that deceased died from chronic indigestion brought about by improper diet and want of exercise, he not having been outside his cottage for eighteen years. The discussion was taken up by the giants of the medical profession, and sbly debated, the conclusion a disease reached being that indigestion is arising from infinitely numerous causes, and itself productive of complaints hardly less nume rous. But it was not then known (as it has been now for thirty-five years) that indigestion has one sure care, viz., Seigel's Syrup.
Mr H. C. Blackie, of Post Office Chambers, Auckland, N.Z., has not kept within his house
On the contrary, he is for eighteen years. traveller and knows the world well. Writing on 16th March, 1903, Mr Blackie observes: For a martyr to indigestion aud years I was Astulence, Wind used to press on the valve of my heart to such an alarming degree that on two occasions I fainted on the platform when publicly speaking. Dietary and medicinal treatment failed utterly and,
on the re coinmendation of a Professor at the Working Men's College, Melbourne, I tried Mother Seigel's Syrup. By taking it regularly after ench al I very soon found relief, and have ever since been able to enjoy all foods without inconvenience. My cure was effected about four yea B ago, when I had consumed from slx to eight bottles; but one bottle was sufficient to
aford me relief. I have never censed to pra's the virtues of Seigel's Syrup in the Colonies I visit as commercial traveller, merely in gratitude for the great benefit derived from it for I have no business connection whatever with its proprietors. What I now say is quite licited. Certainly there no other such pot and easy remedy for all forms of in-

In exchanging cricket yarns a Victorian wicketkeeper states that at Derbyshire he once heard an amusing remark from a very serious umpire. THE NEAR EAST. The relations between Turkey and Bul garia aro again causing a certain anxiety. Extremne resentment is excited in Bulgaria by the incessant persecution of Bulgarians

It is understood (says the Singapore Free Press of the 2ith ult.) that Sir A. F. The Bulgaria has now sent 3,000 troops to the laying out of the now naval base and town- ship at St Margarels Hope is also a duty that the R. E. will have to carry out. And as Sir F.
