In consequence of the importation of foreign sugar from, about 14 or 16 years back, the busines] was now a centre of competition. The Hotel is beautifully situated on a high hill and commands a full view over the mainland, the Bay, and the Island.

LONDON LETTER.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

LONDON, May 29. Scandal and War Office are unhap pily too often linked together, but the action of the authorities in allowing or rather not taking the necessary steps to prevent, the sale of blankets which had been used by typhoid patients to the general public has met with very strong and universal condemnation: It is so easy to say the regulations provide that such blankets should be destroyed or torn into four pieces, but then it is the duty of the responsible officials to sel that these strictures are carried and this they have lamentably failed to do. The outbreak of enteric on the training ship Cornwall led to an inves tigation, when it was discovered thit many of the blankets used by the lads were absolutely filthy, and that they

Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au tomitic tide recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level,

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
