THE BATTLE OF MANILA BAY.
How the Spanish Fleet was Destroyed.
Of the seven Spanish war-ships said to have been sunk by Admiral Dewey's guns off Cavite on May 1st, 1898, four have been mised and two inspected by divers, and not one of these six hulks, says the Man la American, are in the least wise shot to pieces. In fact, an examination, made by Captain Garry (who is conducting the floating operations) has conclusively showr that Admiral Montojo did not wait for the Americans to sink his fleet; but instead took the initiative by setting fire to and opening the ses valves and ports of the
for the shore that resulted in many boatą being overturned and runny strong swim!

of the battle of Manila Bay when Dewey orderel off his fleet for breakfast the prospects of the fight were against him. Those on the Olympin that day are wel aware that Dewey was dubious of the out come, believing that by allowing him to pass Corregidor the Spaniards had led him into a trap, and that he even consulted. with Captain Gridley of the Olympia on the advisability of withdrawing from the bay. This the Captain positively refused to do, according to a certain naval officer who was on the flagship during the engagement. Meantime the Spanish sailors had begun the work of scuttling their ships according to a plan of operations arranged before. Dewey's squadron was half-way from Hongkong to Manila. This plan resulted from the report of two Spanish naval officers who at the beginning of the unpleasantness over the Maine affair visited. Hongkong for the put- pose of viewing the American squadron which was then assembled there, and upon their return to Manila their statements of the superior strength of the American squa- dron over Montojo's fleet caused the latter
to decide upon the course of sinking his ships rather than have then fall into Dewey's hands.
The Spanish gun-boat Argus 1,000 tons was raised on May 28th at Carite. When brought above water she showed that only two shots from Admiral Dewey's fleet had taken effect. These shots had evidently been fired from the smallest calibre guns THE HONGKONG LAND INVEST.FURNISHED HOUSE to Let at Kow-aboard the American war vessels, and had

PETROLEUM FIELDS OF THE
FAR EAST.
At the Petroleum Institute in London, on 30th April, the principal of the Institute (Dr P. Dvorkovitz) delivered the last of a series of lectures on the world's petro. leum fields, the special subject being The Fields of the Far East' Dr Drorkovitz, -says a London paper, mentioned that up to a few years ago the vast populations in the Far East had to depend upon Americs and Russia for their supplies of oil, of which -they used large quantities. The oil import- ed from the other fields was sold at a very high price. The first Far Eastern field to be developed was the Japanese field, and as an inducement, the Government supported the speculators to a great extent; for not only did the Government send their engi neers and geologists to America and Rus- sia to study the fields, but they ulso assisted the people financially, and the result was
that the Japanese field developed very rapid- ly. Now about 301,000-tons was the total

production of the Japan fields; but, aceor CHOICEST Tobacco grown. ding to the latest information which he had received, it was estimated that the produc- tion, which
was greatly increasing, would soon come up to 500,000 tons. The wells" were fairly productive, the average being somewhere about 20 barrels per day. The lecturer the pointed out, by the aid of a chart, the situation of the Far Eastern fields, which, he said, included those of Japan, Java, Bomen, and Sumatra. All those four fields had during the last four years developed to a very large extent, and last year the lattermentioned field alone produced no less than 400,000 tons. Tho total production of the fields of the Far East was about 125,000 tons, which really came to about 5 per cent of the world's yearly but the present progress of the fields showed that in the near future they were destined to play an important part as oil centres. There had been many diffi-had culties in the way of progress; but now those had been surmounted, and thus progress would very quickly follow.
