This story bears out the truth of the state- ment which his Majosty once made in a speech to the Norfolk Agricultural Society, when he said, I am somewhat of a farmer myself.

1104

King Edward is a practical farmer, and

though of necessity his extensive farming operations at Sandringham, Windsor, and Balmoral must be largely conducted through agents, in each place there is evidence that his Majesty takes an active part in the management of the farms It is in Norfolk that he has developed hi own particular ideas regarding agriculture. for the richly stooked farms at Balmora and Windsor are an inheritance from her Late Majesty.

It took much thought, time, and trouble before such high-class breeds of stock could be esta blished on the farms, and it was considered by some competent judges that 80 different breeds of sheep and cattle could not thrive in one district, His Majesty." howover, was of opinion that Sandringham possessed such varying conditions of soil, from the heavy clay lands at Wolferton to the chalk subsoil at Appleton, that there would be little difficulty in obtaining on the estate the various olasses of land upon which these different breeds of cattle would thrive; and the result has borne out the Boundness of his judgment.

The well-known herd of shorthorn cattle has been established for thirty years at Sandringham, and was considered to have

The three best-known

animals from this herd are Pride of Collynie, Crystal Prince, and Carlyle—all of them heavy prize-winners in different show yards throughout the country. The dairy industry is steadily being developed at Sandringham, and the beautiful Jersey and Red Poll cows are becoming more and moro in evidence. This part of the farming operations is patronised by Queen Alexandra. Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given bolow has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au Wa- tomatic tide-recording machine in

ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of wafer on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
