A MODERN FABLE:
A dreamer and a man of action loved a woman. Tho dreamer anid: I shall write verses in her praise; they will touch her vanity, and she will love me for them,'
But the man of action sairl: How old fashioned! I shall corner the stock-inarkot, and that will bring her.'
THE CHINA MAIL.
THE CHINA LIGHT & POWER
So the dreamer wrote verses, and he in- duced a friend of his who ran a ten-cont magazino to print them. And the man of action cornered something or ether, and bo- 245 came a billionaire.
In the meantime, the girl married a man who inherited his money, and they lived happy ever aftor.
But the dreamer was so proud of his verses that he didn't care; and the man of action was so busy that he didn't care.
The only one to suffer was the man sho married.
MY TRUTH.
By Edwin Latham Quarles. God's truth is in the mystery of things,
And power is in the frailness Ho. has
wrought;
So feeling bearts have songs of noblest
thought
When gentlest touches come upon the
strings.
The purple hour of vesper-worship brings
Soul-fights Joss high than flowering
mads have brought;
And in the world no surpliced one has
taught
What hearts may learn from birds' low
carolings
<
God lives in all the fairness He has made,
And holy aro the frailties of His hand; And I am wise when I have full obeyed
The promptings I can little understand ; And I'm strong when I have wept and
prayed
And loved the weakness of a wonian's
hand.

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER.
It is remarkable how greatly our estimate of ourselves and our qualities differs from the esti- mate formed of us by others. If the thing wore practicable, many folks would realise heavily by selling themselves at their own valuation (if they could find customers), and afterwards bay- ing themselves back on the basis of other people's notion of their worth. The more numerous and the harder the blows aimed at our self-conceit in
the days of our youth, the better for us. They pulveriso, as it were, the worsor part of our pa fare, and nothing survives the process but what deserves to endure. And what are you?' asked a Lord Chief Justice of England of a witness who had just given some rambling and discro- ditable evidence. I employ myself as a surgeon,' said the witness. But does anybody olsa om- ploy you as a surgeon? Are your surgeon?" asked the judge. And thereat tho. witness collapsed,
It is claimed for all medicines that they effect eures, though the fact is that some do and sorŁO do not. Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup haq been very extensively used for thirty-five years, and is to-day the principal domestic modicine in sixteen different conut-ins. The number of cures it has effected (especially among parsons suffer ing from indigestion and bilions discasos) is quite incalculable. Of the many thousands of testi- monials as to its efllency voluntarily given, hero is an interesting oue from a mother and daughter. For several years,' writes Mrs. Hutchison, of Nowcastle Road, Jesmond. N.S.W., on October 19th, 100%. I suffered ugonies frou indigestion and liver complsiut. I could noither eat, sleep, nor work-in fact did not know what it was to enjoy a single hour of free om from pain. I was attended by two of the cloverest inedical men in the Newcastle district, Unt their treatment failed to bring me any relief. Indeed, I went stendily downhill. nd began to fear that my case was beyond the aid of medicine. Irew weakly and thin, and becamo dejected, when, two years ago, I was advised to try what Mother Seigel's Ca etive Syrup could do for me. It was a happy decision, for before I had taken a quarter of il e first bottle my health was much improved. I continued to take the medicine according to tla directions for five weeks, by the end of which time I was onred. The enre is evidently a per- manent one, for I have remained well and sound to the present day.'
<
This is good testimony-testimony to be proud of. But it don't stop here. Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup not only cured Mrs. Hutchison of her indigestion and liver complaint, but, in the case of her daughter Agues, arrested the pro- gress of an insidious and dangerous malary which, if allowed to rango unchecked, might have had fatal results. Here is Mrs. Hutchison's own description of her daughter's case: My daugh- ter, she rays. was in a very bad way. She was suffering from severe nervous debility. She wasted away to a skeleton, and appeared to have Do blood in her body. She was no weakly that sho could not walk without assistance, and was often compelled to keep to bed for days together. The doctors seemed to be much in the dark as to her ailment, and as impotent in treating her case as they had boon in their treatment of mire, so I determined to experiment on her with the medicine which had proved such a boon to my- self. The result was that within two months a few botiles of Mother Seigel's, Curative Syrup changed her from a helpless invalid into a hearty, healthy, happy girl. She remains as well as one conld wish her to be.'
Mrs. Hutchison is well known in Jesmond and mbton, and as lived in these places for tnuty years. She is a native of Scotland, wi Cue to Australia in 1872.

This pre- paration purifies the whole system through the Blood, and thoroughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the body.

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled, at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the alysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
