THE USUAL WAY.
A Man had a Piece of Nows.
„A Reporter heard of it.
!
The Reporter called on the Man,
And asked him about the News.
The Man played Balloon with the Reporter.
He swelled noticeably and said;
'You Fellers never get Anything right.
So won't tell you.'
The Reporter did not get angry.
He knew the Man was a Fool.
Ho had seen Them before.
He know the real Facts could be had from
no one else.
Yet the Reporter did the very Best he
could to get at the Truth.
And published the Story as he got it.
Then the Man who had refused to give the Facts arose early and bought a Paper
to see if the Fucts were distorted.
They were.
And he said:
'I told you so.*
Query-With whom should the Public yearn to get even? The Reporter who did
his best, or the arrogant Fool, who delibern- tely refused to help him ?

A MANY-SIDED WORK
AND ITS
NEVER FAILING USEFULNESS.
Why the Encyclopædia Britannica is indispensable to even the most intellectual. THE TENTH EDITION-85 VOLS," Including the supplement, offered by The Times'
in China at the London Prices.
With the exception of the Bible, no book has ever enjoyed so widespread a sale as the Encyclopædia Britannica. It has been purchased by the English-speaking peoples all over the world. The Marquis of Salisbury's name is on the list of the *TIMES' subscribers; so is that of Lord Roberts, of Rudyard Kipling, of Herbert Spencer. And it is a noteworthy fact that among the subscribers are many of the men who helped to make the Encyclopedia the greatest work of reference; as for example Lord Kelvin, who writes the treaties on Hont, Prof. E. Ray Lankoster, who contributes the paper on Zoology, Mrs Humphrey Ward, who writes on Lyly," Lieut.-General Sir Richard Strachey, who writos on the Himalayas,' Sir Frederick Abel, who writes on Gun-Cotton and Nitro-Glycerin, and many more.
Tho many-sided, the all-embracing character of the work, its never failing response in the eager pursuit after the forgotten fact or the truth of which one many retain only a hazy remembrance-in other words its indispensablo usefulness-that is the reason it has appealed to so wide a circle of people, even to the most intellectual men. It is a practical book, ono that a busy worker who thinks while he works, will find it necessary to consult often. Its many-sidedness will be apparent from the following imperfect classification of contents.

An extraordinary demand for the Sup plement has made it possible to offer the 35 volumes for considerably less than the prices at which they can be sold hereafter, More than 30,000 persons at home who already possessed the early volumes have subscribed for the supplement, almost all of them in advance of its publication, so that The Times was enabled to make one consecutive ran' on the presses, and thereby to effect a large reduction in manufagie: ing cost. Subscribers in China are for the moment, ou exactly the same foo subscribers in England, but orders should be registered promptly, as it possi le to guarantee indefinitely the acceptanco of orders in China a prices with the additional concession of free carriage from London to Hongkong.

CANTON, May 11.
AN ELECTRIC TRAMWAY.
PERTINENT QUERIES,
THE CHINA MAIL.
Why do the Chinese officials, as a body, command so little confidence and so much suspicion both as to the causes and relief of faminea?
Why do the Foreign Communities of Hongkong and Canton, whose cheerful and ready gonorosity is a historical tradition. fight shy of subscription lists for the Kwangsi Famino Fund ?
Why did H.E. the Governor undertake to relieve the distress in Kwangsi without more regard to H. B. M. Consul General The American-China Development Com-in Canton, who is the recognised medium pany are now making a complete survey of of communication with the high Chinese Canton City and suburbs with a view to authorities in the Two Kwang? the construction of an electric tramway around the City. This comes naturally, almost necessarily, with the railway. It will bring all parts of the city into direct communication with the main terminus of the Canton-Bankow line, and also with the Hongkong line, if we ever have it. It is pleasant to contemplate the changes that this innovation will bring about. An elevated line, I presume, is the only possi- bility unless the promised bund is used, At any rate we shall be able to get about the City, at more than a snail's pace. Soon, it is hoped, there will be more varied and less confined recreation than one can now onjoy. A pleasure park does not seem to be a very remote possibility. It does not require the vision of a prophet to seo that congested Canton will soon spread more and more into the surround- ing territory. A ride around the route of the electric tramway will be a most de- lightful change, for us, who live in this great metropolis. And so best wishes are with the promoters of this enterprise.

authorization from the State Department to draw $500 U.S. Currency, for the benefit of the Kwangsi Famine sufferers, and I understand that this is only one of several contributions. Mr. McWade is Vice-President of the Citizen's Relief As- sociation of Philadelphia, a permanent or- ganization for the relief of suffering in any part of the world. Since 1879, the date of its establishment, it has distributed mail- lions to sufferers from famine, carthquake, and Hood. I am not informed whether or not this contribution is from that Society.
First we wish to thank those who have O promptly and ably undertaken the con- tinuing of the work when it had grown beyond what we could carry on, and now the starving people have more to hope for. When Mr Clementi was here, he wrote fully of what he saw and what had been dove up to that time, so we will only give you an account of what has been done since that time. Mr Clementi watched the people as they came in and went out of the building where we distribute rice, and after we had finished that day's work, said there was only one thing he had to suggest, and that was that we give a little more rice to those who seemed more needy. This wo and long desired to do, seeing that many who had been coming to us for weeks were not gaining as we wished they might, and some wore oven growing weaker, but we had not sufficient money to warrant our doing it, so bad to give less than, we really felt was needed to sustain life. Since we have given a larger portion, the numbers have increased very materially, for two reasona, first because of the larger portion, - and secondly because the rice planting is all finished, and many who while thus engaged had at least food provided, now have not anything to eat and no way of earning money to procure even the barest necessaries of life. On Saturday, May 2nd, The distant sound of rifles and the the crowd was so large that we were utter heavier boom of cannon was heard in ly unable to get them into the premises Canton this morning. I subsequently heard provided, so at a moment's notice, the Pro- that a fight, I might say battlo, was going fect gave us the use of his Yamen court-

A foud has existed for many to women and children, and on the 6th, to the men, so to-day we gave to between five years which originated in connection with and six thousand, and to-morrow the men are to get their share. The severity of the

I have not been able weeks ago, and the farmers have, as yet to learn tlic immediate occasion. nothing coming in to help even a little. Business is very poor, and the city people are also in great need. For theso there is some help, as the gontry are giving to those whose games were given in on a certain date, and are known to bo residents. But even here there are many whose relatives would not allow them to register their names and thus disgrace the family name, and again some have not been here long and cannot get help.
The Cantonese merchants in this city. have bought some rice and are to begin distributing to-morrow. They have to- night been in to consult with us about the matter, as they had expected to alternate with us, one distributing on the odd days and the other on the even days, but since the crowd is so large we decided that they give to the men, and we to the women and children.
Wednesday evening.
The merchants have had their first day's experience, and the number of men was fully double what it was on any previous day, and to-day the magistrate recommend- ed our moving to another premises which is twice as large as the ore we have been using, and said he would attend to the moving of the matsheds already erected.
According to the number of people who were coming when Mr Clementi was here the one hundred and fifty piculs per week would have been sufficient, but now that so many more are coming, we would like to ask that the Committee keep this in mind, as we believe Mr Clementi will see the urgent need of more rice and will ask you to let us have more. Some tine ngo, the smaller gifts that came enabled us to continue the distribution, but these, oven in the past week, have been quite in- sufficient, and had it not been for what you sent by the Hongkong Bank we would have had to cease the distribution.
A CLAN FIGHT ON HONAM ISLAND.
Both sides have several hundred foreign rifles-Mauser, I understand-besides a number of larger arms. Many people are witnessing the fight from neighbouring heights. It is impossible to learn the casualties at this time. Neither side will ever tell,' a Chinaman said to me, for they do not want the other side to say,' 'wo So the dead are buried as soon won.' after they are killed as possible. Special compensation is made to the immediate families of those who are killed. I presume the officials will step in and restore order after the fight is over.
A GOLD STANDARD FOR CHINA.
Mr G. Vigna dal Ferro writes as follows to the N.-C. Daily News :—
I had the opportunity of perusing a plan of 15 articles published some time ago by the Peking and Tientsin Times on The Gold Standard without a Gold Currency in China,' and I am glad to see that this plan coincides in many points with the letter I had the pleasure of publishing in your columns in February last. The points we agres upon are:-

in a remarkably short time, often a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, superseding injections, the use of which does irre- parable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious diseases.
THERAPION No. 2
for impurity of the blood, scurvy, pimples, spots, blotches, pains and swelling of the joints, secon dary symptoms, gout, rheumatism, and all disease for which it has been too much'a fashion town- ploy mercury, sarsaparilla, &c., to the destruction of sufferers' teeth and ruin of health. This pre- paration purifies the whole system through" the blood, and thoroughly eliminates every polionons tamattan from the bed.
THERAPION No. 3
fornervous exhaustion, impaired vitality, sleepless- ness, and all the distressing consequences of earlyí Error, excess, residence in hot, unhealthy climates, &c. It possesses surprising power in restoring strength and vigour to the debilitated.
THERAPION is sold by all
the principal Chemists and Merchants throughout the World, Price in England 2/9 & 4/6. In ordering, state which of the three numbers is required, and observe above Trade Mark, which is a fac-simile of word THERATION' as it appears on British Government Stamp (in white letters on a red ground) affixed to every package by order of His Majesty's Hon. Commissioners, and without which it is a forgery.
