Independently of the question of over- strain, a high degree of physical develop. ment is often fatal, if for any reason the subject is compelled to cease his muscular work and, adopt a sedentary life. Disuse meant degeneration, and degeneration meant a lack of resistance of which the tubercle bacillus was not slow to take advantage. On several occnsions when I have been compelled to consu training for one reason or another it has required many months for my system to become adapted to the now conditions. The time arrives in the lives of all athletes when the oxigencies of one's occupation, or advancing years, as- sociated with the lack of enthusiasm in- cidontal to the middle period of life, bring about a cessation of active training, many instances the result is disastrous, and while, in common with a number of others whom I have known, I have seen no particularly disastrous results in my own persun, the instances in which the opposite

with me in the foregoing views.
One of the marked evils of systematic training is the fact that . . . the digestive function is very much disturbed, in many instances, by the cessation of the hard, systematic muscular work. Functional disturbance of the liver is very often met in athletes out of training. I have noted in certain individuals that some particular form of athletics was absolutely necessary to maintain the normal hepatics function; thus, in one case the individual was pelled to indulge vigorously in boxing to avoid hopatic torpor.
The movoments
com-
involved in excessive sparring seemed to have an especially stimulating action upon the liver, and a fow deys' cossation of the violent exercise produced considerable disturbance.'

A FEW OF THE
2,000 CONTRIBUTORS
TO The 10th Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica.
Ever since its inception at Edinburgh mora than: 125 years ago, the Encyclopaedia Britannica has not failed to command the contributions of the foremost writers of the day. In fact, to be invited to contribute to its pages has long been regarded by literary men as a great distinction. Now that the Tenth Edition (35 vols.) of this celebrated work has been completed, it is interesting to nors that while the list of contributors to the present edition includes a host of notable ames in every sphere of contemporary life, an equally distinguished company of literary men assisted in the work of preparing the earlier editions. Among those we find the names of Dugald Stewart (who was paid £1,700 for a Philosophical Dissertation, in the supplement to the fifth edition) Sir Walter Scott. Macaulay. Arage, Malthus, Ricardo, James Mill, Hazlitt, De Quincer Sir David Brewster, Kingsley and Professur Owen. The Tenth Edition, which necessarily the largest over issued, engaged the services of note than 2,000 wribenm (British, Colonial, European, and Amorigan). The list includes the following —

From further telegrams (given below) it will be acon that Mr Clementi offers us ad-
ditional evidence of the great extent of the Famine in Kwangsi' and of the good work done by the officials and gentry of the various districts suffering from the dearth of food. Our readers can make their our in- ferences from the wording of the messages, and we print them as they have come to hand. They are as follow:-

On Saturday, night, the populace in the vicinity of Kennedy Town was greatly excited by shouts of fire, and the spect- acle of clouds of dense smoke arising from the direction of the Kennedy Town Plague Hospital. To Governor, Hongkong.
Have consulted officials and gentry, who estimate number of persons, in need of famine relief in Nanning City at 25,000, and in Taun-Fa district of 45,000. Free distribution of rice grual and sale of cheap rico has been made by gentry since 12th February last, but they estimate that their rice supply will only last another thirteen days, and recommend the continuance of free distribution of rice gruel and sale of cheap rice in Nanning and in eight centres of Tsun Fa district until end of July. They estimate total amount of rice required at 18,200 piculs. It is urgently necessary that relief should be sont immediately, as The fire broke out at about 9 o'clock in a transport from Kwan Tu Sing occupies at matshed in the wood-yard, and listed for least twelve days, and unless rice arrives about six hours, and was a brilliant spec- before present supply is exhausted, the tacle, witnessed by hundreds of people, people will starve. Fatal Blaze at Des Voeux Road.
Shortly after 12 o'clock last night, the Fire Brigade under Chief Inspector Raker. was summoned to Des Voeux Road Central, and found No. 126 and 127, five storied buildings, ablaze. All the engines were in attendance, including the Floating on- gine, and hoses were set playing on tho flames from the opposite buildings, and from the roof of the house adjoining the burning building. The outbreak started on the top floor, a boarding house, and spread rapidly to the lower floors. Before got under control flames and dens smoke wero issuing from all sides. The hoses used from the street, possessed too little power to reach the second flat, and thus the fire held sway. for about two hours. While the fire was in

progress, shouts of save life were heard, and a native lad, barely 9 years of age, was observed on the verandah of the second flat. The fire escape was at once put up, but before assistance reached him the unfortunate lad disappeared from sight, and was burned to death. His remains, partly charred, were discovered when the fire was subdued. This spectacle was witnessed by hundreds of people. About an hour after the outbreak, the roof fell in, carrying with it the remains of the flats below. The ground floor was used as an oil store, and the two floors above were occupied by the owners of the top flat. The property was insured for $28,000 with Chinese firms, and the damage is estimated at $16,000.
Fire in a Bakery. On Saturday evening, the Fire Brigade of the Eastern district, wes summoned to a fire, which occurred at the premises of Chy Loong Bakery. The outbreak was caused by the careless placing of some biscuits, in baskets, over an oven. The baskets caught alight, but the fire was extinguished before much damage was done. The total loss is estimated at 870.

There is nothing on the wild and precipitous highlands of the Tonkin border likely to invite attacks from either Chinese revolutionist or brigand. The French are acquiring certain milway- interests in Yunnan, but the inhabitants of this province are not feared by the French as being anti-foroign, and if they were France has very little there at jresent | to lose. The only remaining point at which French territorial interests are likely to suffer from the troubles in South China, is the colony (to call it by its real name) of Kwangchauwan. Here, given opportunity, the expenditure of much money, and a wise policy of self-government, French interests may one day become important; at present commercially they do not amount to a row of pins. Where then, may well be asked, do French fears arising from the unsettled state of South China, come in?
Franca has nothing actually to fear tor- ritorially and the only possible assumption is that the unsettled condition of the two Kwangs has caused the French Minister to feel uneasy concerning French commercial interests in Kwangtung,-first at Kwang

The estimated damage caused by the Fires was $2,144,919,50, and by the Incipient Fires 81,159.50.
At Canton, however, the French have vested interests concerning which it is conceivable they may be anxious. For the
