The commands are overstuffed. The regiments are work.

There is insufficient mounted infantry. Defective transport.

The distribution is faulty.

All India (adds the Express) is looking with keen interest to the contest which is expected, between the Viceroy's Council and Lord Kitchener, when the lattor demands mony for reforms. The members of the Council are opposed to reorganisation, and as Lord Kitchener is sent to India to look up the defences, there is sure to be a battle for supremacy between him and the military | member of Council over the appropriations for military work. The Commander-in Chief in India is practically subordinato in matters of finance to the military member of Council, holding much the same position as the Army chief at home does to the War Secretary.

A CHINESE RELIGIOUS FUNC-

TION.

It is not generally known, not even to very old European residents (says the Streit Tines in a recont issue), that the Chinese, or some of them, occasionally practise a function closely resembling that' of the Hindus in so far as walking on heated charcoal, lying on a bed of sharp nails, flagellation, transfixing the checks with skewers etc. are carried out. Such a function took place during the forenoon of Sunday at a Chinese temple in Ballontier Road, close to its junction with Moulmein Road. From enquiries it was learned that 920 Wee Kim Eng, the uncle of Tan Boo Liat, had in fulfilment of a vow given a four days' wayang performance, commencing on Sunday, the anniversary of the nativity of the Joss. Three mon, worked up to a very excited state, were the principal per- forners. Two cartloads of charcoal were made into five heaps and set on fire. While they were burning to a white heat, these men flagellated themselves with a heavy globular spiked weapon, about ten inches in diameter. It was fixed to a cord and thrown over the shoulder so that the spikes should pierce the skio. This was followed by cutting the skin of the back (alightly) with the sharp edge of a kris, 455 tons.

One man bled himself freely in this manner, Iron Composite

Coppersheathed. This part of the function was done over Hawthorn's. Thomson's four tubs of water, which was thus made EACH with TWO CYLINDRICAL TUBULAR BorERS and THREE WOODEN MASTS,

As they now lie in the Harbour of Hongkong.

to possess virtue, as the people eagerly washed the faces of their children. Within the temple one of the three men cut his tongue sufficiently to make it bloed. With the ensanguined saliva he wrote what was intended to be a prescription for a female worshipper. The next part of the function was lying on the bed of nails. These were ordinary sharp nails projecting two inches and certainly had a very uninvi- ting appearance. The excited men were laid on this bed one after, another, büt were removed in a half a minute. The fire-walk- ing closed this expiatory or propitiatory function. The fire bed was four feet broad and a dozen yards long, The three.men were joined by others in the feat and some of them ran twice, even thrice, over the fiery space. The function was under the

The time to act is when the child first becomes hoarse. If Cham- berlain's Cough Remedy is freely given, all tendency to croup will soon disappear. Even after the croupy cough has developed, it will prevent the attack. There is no danger in given this remedy as it contains nothing injurious. It always cures and cures quickly. Mr Pollock said it was clear from the pleadings put in that practically the ques- tion his Lordship would have to decide was the question of the construction of the covenant in the deed of mortgage under which the plaintiffs purported to have exer- cised the power of letting these premises. There was only one question of fact about which the parties might or might not be agreed upon, and that was the question as to when these premises were let. His Lordship would see from the statement of claim that these premises were lot by the defendants to tenants of their own-- that was to say, they did not find the plaintiff in possession and give them notice to pay rent to them (the defendants), but they created a new tenancy. Mr Phillips said if it was necessary, he would ask for an amendment of the plead ings and answers to allow him to argue this point.

His Lordship said he was inclined to allow the letter to go in.

Mr Phillips said if he could show that the plaintiff had recognised that latter as sufficient notice then they had comp ied with the proviso in the mortgage deed. The property was mortgaged to the full amount of not less than $11,000. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sen løvel.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3. feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamout Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
