Alice and the Caterpillar.

The Paterkiller and the Society Child looked at each other for some time in kilence; at Inst the Paterkiller put down his judge's notes of the caau, and, passing his hand over his wig, addressed her in a puzzled, hopeless voice.

* Who are you?' said the Paterkiller. This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. The Society Child replied. rather tragically, 'I-I hardly know just at prosent-at least I know who I was n fow days ago, but. I think I must have been changed several times since then.!

What do you mean by that?' said the Paterkillor sadly. Explain yourself!'

I can't explain myself, I'm afraid,' said"

the Society Child, because I'm not

*I don't see,' said the Paterkiller.

* I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly," the Society Child replied, very woofully, for I can't understand it myself, to begin with; and having so many different fathers in a day is very confusing.'

*It isn't,' said the Paterkiller, referring to a newspaper file of old divorce cases,

THE CURRENCY OF CHINA.

Another Fallacy Exposed.' At the Shanghai Chamber of Comuierco ammual mesting, which adapted a resolution advocating a gold standard for Chinn, Mr C. J. Dudgeon, whose remarks are entitled to the highest respect, said-I should like to emphasise one or two points in connection with the theory held in some quarters that low exchange stimulates exports. I. con- on the part of Russia on the reding of confess I have been to some trouble in working ditions disputed by Peking. The Moukden out figures of the trade in China for some years and, although I have not these Viceroy and the Taotsi who is to take over complete as yet, I can give a general sum the government of the port are awaiting in mary. Take the import trade for the past Moukden the notification from the Russian 11 years; I have not thought it necessary to go back further in regard to them. My Administration Authorities that they may figures show what China has bought in ster- arrive to nasuma charge, and the Administ-ling, ottaels, in the year 1902, as compared with what she bought in sterling in 1892. rator is still without instructions from

You will find that China paid out in gold Peking in this regard..

Jast year 47 per cent, more than she did in 1-92, and in that porind exchange has fallen 44 por cent. There is, therefore, an indic at that there is a purchasing power in China, a power the extent of which we are inclined too much to overlook. Take the export trade; I have treated that somewhat differently nud gone back 20 years and I have divided my figures into two decades 1882 to 1891 and 1892 to 1901-while I have set out those for 1902 separately. I find in that period of 21 years exchange has fallen 54 per cent, while the increase in the export trade has been about 30 per cent, aa ngainst, on the inport side, an increase for that period of 21 years, of 68 per cent. Therefore it is perfectly plain that the theory that a fall in exchango stimulates exports is an absolute fallacy. It has been proved so in India. What we want is a stable exchange, and I think we shall be wise to accept Mr. Anderson's no- tion so as to further the movement in that direction. To get a stable exchange is an absolute essential in my opinion for the trade of this Empire. We have seen a most enormous increase in the sterling pur. chasing power of China, an increase of 88 per cent in 21 years and on the other side we see that the export trade has only in- creased by 30 per cent. A stable exchange is what we require, and we ought to do overything in our power to bring it about.

Not content with the high prices now ruling for Beans in-country, dealers are holding for an increase, counting on the probability of a still keener demand in view of the fact that the supply is below the average quantity.

The result will be the closing of the Beanmille until such time as the dealers realize the necessity of dropping their prices to a purchasable standard.

JOHN SCOTT.

The Times of Ceylon of the 9th inst. says:-When business men сяте into their offices this morning, they wore shocked to learn of the death of Mr Hercules J. Scott, of the firm of Messra Bosanquet & Co. It was known on the previous day that he was seriously ill at the General Hospital, but few then realised that his life was practically despaired of. A fortnight ago he was on a fishing tour in the Horton Plains, and although he cannot be described as a robust man, there was nothing, to indicate that he would so soon be laid low.

Since the issue of our last circular, dated the 10th instant, our Yarn Market, owing to the falling off in demand from the Nor. thern Ports, coupled with a decline it prices in India, and the rise in Exchange, tuled rather quiet. This has had the effect of lowering prices from fifty cents to a dollar and a half per bale on last mail's prices. A moderate business has transpired in No. 20s, at a decline of about fifty cents to a dollar per bale.-A fair business was done in No. 16s at ourront prices.--No. 128, despite an enquiry, shows a decline of about fifty cents to $1 per bale.-No. 10s as usual move freely, and prices here and thero show a decline of about a dollar. --Meagre stocks of Nos. 6s and Sa induced buying, and in these counts only prices show an improvement from 81 to $2 per balo.- Safes during the past fortnight consist of about 25 Bales of No. 6s -1,425 Bales of No. 10-1,475 Bales of No. 125,-750 Bales of No. 165,-and 1,425 Bales of No. 20-in all about 5,100 Balos.
