A Red Light will be exhibited from a White Pole surmounted by a circular shape erected on Princes' Wharf which will, when kept in line with Woosung Lighthouse, lead midway between Lismore Wreck Light-boat and the 12-foct contour of the Woosung Spit, this being the line of deepest water, The two lights in line will bear S. 76° 33′ W.

In the House of Commons this afternoon, Captain Charles Barrington Balfour called attention to the correspondence and moved the appointment of a Select Committee to enquire into the engineers' grievances.
Sir Seymour King seconded the mot Earl Percy said that Lord George Humil- ton had fully investigated every case, stat ing his reasons for disagreeing with the me- morialists The Indian Government had not unconditionally supported a single claim, but simply desired to give Lord George Hamilton the fullest information with a view to a final decision. The India Office has no knowledge of a leaflet attach- ed to the Cooper's Hill prospectus in 1874.- The appointment of a Committee would be a fatal blow to the responsibility of the beads of all public departments.
The motion was rejected by 14 votes to 50.

That in spite of skilled medical aid I was many years a tharter to indigestion and a strangely disordered stomach, and that had it not been for Mother Seigel's Carativa Syrup I doubt whether I should be alive to-day. For a year or two before I broke down, I never know what it was to have a day's good health. I was always ailing. The least exertion tired me, and I folt drowsy, despondent, and very good Ordinarily. I lind a miserable. appetite, but just then my food began to disagree with me, and I felt uncomfortable after it. There was a fulness and distension of the stomach that seemed to affect the heart. My breath was very short. Finally, a pain settled in the obest and under the left shoulder. I ought to have attended it to at once; but on- fortunately neglected to do so, consequently the disease developed. I had always an unpleasant taste in the month, and my tongue was dry and parched. My appetite, hitherto good, was now very poor, and after forcing myself to eat I often had violent pains in the stomach, and used to breakout into a crld perspiration, feel- ing so chilled that I shivered from head to foot. My condition becoming so serious, I consulted a doctor; but in spite of all ho did for moI grew worse, and at the end of six weeks was advised to go into a hospital at York. There I was treated with great kindness, but I think my case must have puzzled the doctors for, after detaining me cleven weeks they sent me away ancured Then began the most painful period of my illness. When I got home my mother was shocked at my appearance. She bas since suid that she believed I had come home to die.. I was troubled with obstisate constipation, my sleep was broken, and when I lay awake it the bed were sinking ander me.

had left, and I was soon so weak that I could scarcely walk across the room. To go upstairs, I had to crawl on my hands and knees, and it was only with the greatest difficulty that I got down to the sofa again next day. Thus I was for three years a confirmed invalid. Meanwhile, I had seen a specialist whose treatment scomed to do me good at first; but in the end I found Almost in despair, and myself as bad as over.
I tried Mother Seigel's a last resource. Curative Syrup. Ab, if only I had tried it before! I began to mend as soon as I had taken half of the first bottle. My appetite improved, slightly it is true; but what I ate agreed with me. The night sweats consed, and gradnally strength returned, so that by the aid of a walking stick I could get about. My con- valescence was a long one, but by persevering with the Syrup, all the bad symptoms left me. and 1 was able to resume my work again. My present employment is a very arduous one, compelling me to expose myself to all kinds of weathers; still, I feel none the worso for it. Believing that it may benefit some other sufferer, I regard it as my duty to make these facts known. And I make this solemn declaration conscientionely believing the same to be true. By virtue of the Statutory Declaration Act of 1835 (William IV. c. 62) Declared at Malton, in the county of Yorkshire, the 6th of May, 1902, by John Boddy Mintoft, before Arthur L. C. A Chinaman stole a cow valued at $60 and last night slaughtered it in a matahed near the Kennedy Town slaughter house. The carcase was cut up and prepared for the market, when the delinquent was ar-
rusted by Sergeant Grant. Mr J. H. Kemp imposed a line of 850 for the second offence, slaughtering the animal in other than a Government slaughter house, and sentenced the prisoner to three months' im. prisonment for the theft.

A CHARTER PARTY CASE.
Today, judgmont was delivered in the action in which Tam Long Chuen und Loung Sheung. No 267 Des Voeux Rond, claimed to recover $25,000 from J. E. von der Ohe, of Burgun. Norway, owner of the steamer Sleipner, who counterclaimed for $32,000.
Mr E. H. Sharp, K.C. (instructed by Mr Bowley, of Messrs Dennys and Bowley) appeared on behalf of the plaintiffs, and Mr T. Morgan Phillips (instructed by Mr G. C. C. Master) for the defendant.
The Chief Justice gave judgment as follows: In this case the plaintiffs claim damages against the defendant for breach of a charter party alleged to have been committed by the owners o the Norwegian steamer Sleipner. The charter, which began on 27th January, 1902, was between the plaintiffs and the East Asiatic Trading Company as agents for the defendant and the captain of the Sleipner. It was a time charter for twelve months, and one of the conditions was that the Sleipner's speed

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis
of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during
the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level,
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
