The bond was situated at Miller's Point, and was a brick building seven storeys high. The place was packed with inerchandise which, according to the statement of the owners, Messta Oawald and Fowler, was valued at nearly half-a-million sterling. The conflagration was witnessed by thous ands of spectators. During the fire the wells of the building collapsed, one burying two houses, from which, however, every- 891 thing of value had been removed.

April 1.-The London correspondent of the Indian Daily News, telegraphing on 30th March, states that Sir Hector Mac Donald's coffin was enclosed in a common deal packing-case, and was conveyed to the goods station in Paris in a parcel-delivery van, without ceremony. On arrival at London Bridge it was placed in a railway parcel-van and was driven to King's Cross, where it was deposited in the luggage brako-van. This treatment has greatly in- censed the public.

The origin of the fire is unknown. The Abolition of the Lance, March 31.-Lord Stanley, answering speeches with reference to the abolition of the lance, read a letter from Sir Ian Hamil- ton dwelling on the disadvantages of the lance in the Boer war, saying that, while it might be useful in India, where it might be necessary to encounter swordsmen, in mo- dern warfare, the lance was a great disad- vantage, for it is only possible to bring less FROM ANTWERP, LONDON, PORT than half a Lancer regiment into the firing line. Moreover lances revealed the posi tion of troops.

Lord Stanley added that the abolition of the lance was supported by Lord Roberts, who, above all, was qualified to know the requirements of the Indian service.

The Council of National Defence.

March 28.-On resumption of the dobato, mentioned on the 25th March, regarding the new Council of National Defence, Lord Ripon said it was impossible to conceive a military system less suited to the possible needs of India than Mr Brodrick's, which was a heavy burden on the country. In view of the vast expenditure in respect of India, the Council of Defence should in- clude the Secretary for India and his prin cipal military officers.
